Converting an standard six string guitar into a MIDI signal? Possible?

Okay... so I was wondering.

Is there any way to run a guitar directly into an interface, a PA mixer or a digital interface like a PreSonus Firestudio, and then map each of those individual notes as a MIDI trigger? Allowing you essentially to play a synth or whatever with the guitar?

not in the way you describe but there are pickups (i.e. roland GK-3) and whole guitars that will send midi per string so you can drive a synth. I had a Yamaha G10 for a while and it was pretty neat. Very Pat Metheny

I did manage to find a few VSTs that will convert a pitch to a MIDI mapping... I'm pretty excited to play with that when I get home

There are plenty that do that but are all designed for monophonic sounds, if your just plucking then that's fine but forget about chords

Yep... that was the plan to begin with.

Now if only I understood MIDI enough to figure out how the hell to use these VSTs

How do you use Melodyne to do this? Sounds cool, might justify me buying it

they're getting closer to being able to do this all the time... cubase5 has some new features that make this possible from what i've seen on some vid demos... though it seems kinda convoluted at present...
