Hi All,

Please forgive me for such a simple question but I have recently started mixing completely inside the box and I was wondering about Pre and Post-Fader uses in Cubase 4 or any DAW for that matter.

Since the circuitry is completely different from a console, what are the differences between pre-fader insert/send effects and post-fader insert/send effects? And how are these differences useful mixing inside the box?

Well, its the same concept as a console.

Pre-fade signals are taken after the gain, but but before the fader. For example if you send -6dB to an FX channel, it will always send the same level of signal, no matter what the fader volume.

Post-fade signals are taken after the fader. Sending -6dB to an FX channel will send the 'fader setting plus -6dB's' worth of signal.

Same concept for inserts. Pre-fade inserts will have an effect before the fader. For example a snare drum gate will always open when the signal crosses the threshold, no matter what the fader is set on. Post-fade snare gate will open based on how far up the scale the fader is.

See?
