Hello!

There's more and more websites to broadcast independant music. I'm really curious to know which one is your favourite website to promote your music, even sell it, and above all, why...

Thank you

I like artists to have a homepage.

If a band can't secure their own domain name and web space, it just seems less professional to me.

Sure! I share your opinion and it's a mistake to replace its website by Myspace but, it's not really the question ;)

Those websites are an aditionnal "weapon", don't you think?

I like Myspace. It is still the best tool to get exposure to a non-artist audience. Soundclick and others are great for artists looking for other artists, but its unlikely for many average joes to look on soundclick for new bands, they'll rather be on Myspace.

Can't argue with what Nightfire said. I picked Soundclick only because I use it, not that I think it's great. I actually try to avoid Myspace if I can. Just want a place to hang my tunes.

*sigh* "Yes" He said begrudgingly.

I largely just resent social-networking because I don't have enough time to use it. I'm too busy trying to actually make my music to set up a decent-looking myspace. :(

myspace is probably the most effective. more people are familiar with it, which makes it more accessible.

as far as the actual website and content go, i like virb, although i really haven't had much experience with it. madeloud.com is a new one i got pitched at a concert a few weeks ago. a new one to copy and paste the band stuff onto, yay.

in my opinion, myspace is a good social network, but as far as music reverbanation is a great site that provides, tracking, stats and widgets (both video and music) to help you spread the word. myspace is fresh don't get me wrong.. that's where everyone's at. but as far as a site thats best for musicians/artists i'd say reverbnation takes the cake.

I think MySpace is best for younger bands, but my favorite site for music would have to be chewbone.blogspot

what about upload limits?

My favorite site is going to be whichever makes me compress and butcher my song the least. I have a song that clocked in over 11 minutes, so you can imagine what I had to do to it to get it on myspace. Quality suffered poorly.
My question is which of the listed sites have the most lenient upload limits? Myspace is 10mb and under and audiostreet is 15 and under.

I have the same problem! Songs on Myspace at 96kbps is really low quality... On Reverbnation, I bought "mega storage" (29$/year) for 25 mo by song.

I'm still wondering how I'll put them on Myspace, maybe just with the Reverbnation player...

speaking from the experience of being a "younger band" :p

we have accounts set up at many sites, including myspace, facebook, reverbnation, garageband, last.fm, ourstage, purevolume, virb, imeem, ilike, youtube, flickr, fanbridge, and twitter. really the only three we rely on constantly, besides our personal site, are facebook, myspace and youtube. I just bought a video camera, so hopefully we will have video up there soon.

but most importantly we have our own website. all of these social networking sites have a link back to our personal site.

some might ask how we keep up with updating all those sites? www.artistdata.com is probably the best thing ever. it pushes out blogs, gig dates and other information to many of these websites i mentioned.

Does anyone know which site encodes files most gently?
Ive tried Myspace and Audiostreet and niether are good with encoding. Audiostreet was horrible. It warped the timing and I had all these chirps. I took it down. Myspace wasnt as bad, but I still had noise in the background. You can check the Myspace out and give your opinion on whether Im just being harsh because Im the artist or whether the encoding really butchered it.

My vote goes once again for ReverbNation! ;)

I voted for Myspace and truthfully, it is not my favorite but I think it has the best marketing/networking potential to get new fans. Alot of other sites traffic is other musicians and that is great but you NEED a fan base to get anywhere.

Just updating from my last post on the thread. A producer friend tipped me off to export down at 16 bit, 44 khz so I did. I export from Cubase to Audacity at 16 bit/ 44 for mastering and upload at 160 or 192 bit to myspace and the quality is much better. You guys should check it out and give me opinions. Add me if you like it.

I think all these websites are awesome ways to get your music out there! I feel like Myspace is the best format for sharing music although I have to admit I prefer to use Facebook!
