tomorrow a year ago, my Dad breathed his last breath on this Earth...

Soon after I wrote this song about him and uploaded it here. Now I've remixed it and would like to share it with you again on the first anniversary of his death.
My Dad was the sweetest kindest man I ever knew and his passing away left a big hole in my heart. This song was and still is my coming to terms with his loss in the only way I know. I would appreciate it if you gave it a listen and would be happy to hear your comments and criticism, as always.

these are the lyrics:

The valley

I still feel you here beside me
Reaching out your hand to guide me
Long to hear your voice to comfort
Like you’re still there
I still see the pain that held you
Praying to the Lord to save you
Searching for the words to tell you
How I tried

But it’s only life
It’s only life

I never found the time to tell you
How this boy had grown to manhood
All the dreams and all the sadness
I still survived
But when I held your hand I knew
You know all that I have been thru
I’m sure you’re looking down upon me
From where you are

But it’s only life
It’s only life

Somewhere there’s a valley
Where the sun always shines
I can see you smile
My heart says you’re still here beside me
I know we’ll meet again
At the end of time

Maybe one day
I’ll see an answer
A silver lining
A reason for this life

One last sad goodbye
On a cold december night
A part of me just died
I see us holding hands
Just like two old friends
I know we’ll meet again
At the end of time

What a fitting tribute to someone who meant so much to you...it really comes thru in the lyrics and your vocal performance. 12 string guitar sounds really good, as do the electrics when they kick in, which is a very cool dynamic to this...if I would change anything , it would be to raise the drums in the mix on the heavier parts of the song to emphasize that dramatic dynamic even more..
Very touching song, well done!

What a beautiful song with touching lyrics. I could really feel the emotion behind it. One of the most touching songs I've heard.

Reminds me of this quote: "Human life is a journey. Towards what destination? How do we find the way? Life is like a voyage on the sea of history, often dark and stormy, a voyage in which we watch for the stars that indicate the route. The true stars of our life are the people who have lived good lives. They are lights of hope."

I'll keep your dad in my prayers.

Beautiful, brother. My ex brother in-law recently passed away in an car accident and I'm making a song for him. He was a great guy and I have suffered his loss a great deal. Great tribute to your dad. I'm sure hes listening and love the song. Un abrazo, hermano.

Thank you for the kind words, Queepy.
It was kind of hard putting the words on paper when I wrote it. I knew exactly what I had to write, because I was feeling it all, but it was still hard because of the whole ordeal I was going thru. But I felt a lot better once I did because music is the air that I breathe. But I'm sure it's that way for all of us here.
I'll have look at those drums, thanx again! :)

Thank you Jon, if there is one person that understands emotion in a voice, that has to be you ;)
Yes, going tthru something like this makes you ask a lot of questions abiout the meaning of it all and one's own mortality. Ever since he passed away there has not been a day when I haven't thought about him. I keep hoping he's in a better place where the sun always shines......

Losing your brother in law in such a horrid way must have been really hard for you. But thank God we have our music to turn to and find comfort in. I really look forward to hearing your song!

Paz y amor

Sorry for your loss Joe, my parents are approaching 80 and I expect to get the call(s) someday...

The only thing mix-wise would be the kick sounding a little hot in spots where the music was in its quieter spots....

Great writing and arrangement. The song has good dynamics in it, bringing forth that incredible voice you possess. The last line is classic...

Thanx for your nice thoughts Gerry. I hope you still have a lot of time to spend with your parents. I guess all of us are doomed to go through the ordeal someday, so we must treasure the moments we have with our loved ones.

I'm learning to stop mourning now and celebrate the life he had instead.

I think I need to post a photo - everyone keeps thinking I'm a boy! :)

Again, great song.

Wow -- I missed this last time. Very good mix and performance (and singing, as usual)

Tough subject matter, but you really pulled it off - hope you're getting some time for reflection today.

Sweet words & a nice remix - (there's some sib in the 1st few phrases).
The axiom about suffering and art is often the case. At least feeling something deeply and expressing that depth artistically is, if nothing else, a catharsis - and when it's done well, as in your piece, it gives others a chance to empathise, sympathise and in many instances use the artist's expression as a chance to expend pent up emotions.
Ah, what I meant was - this is good and I can feel a little of it too.

Chef -
thanx for the nice words ;):)

Ray -
yes, art and tragedy go hand in hand, the examples are endless...
I'm glad it touched you in some way too. I thought about redoing the voice because of the sibs in the beginning. But I'm worried about not getting the right emotion in the voice. I recorded this about a week after he passed away....

Really appreciate it, guys!

That is a very nice song and a great tribute to you're father. As I posted in the New Rep Thread-I also lost my mother last year and would love to have the voice you have to write and sing her a tribute.
The acoustic intro was a very good beginning-the vocal harmonies excellent as in all of you're songs. Just my opinion, but the drums are a little overpowering for a ballad like this-maybe they are a little too 'out front' when they first come in-or they need a different snare sound maybe. Just my opinion as I've said and everything else is great.

Wow, sorry man. My dad is still around and we do a lot of things together. He's my friend and hero. I totally dread the day that he's gonna pass away. Just typing those words puts a lump in my throat. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

Your song is a nice tribute. As for the mix, I think the vocals could be a little drier and the drums tamed a little. Great performances though.

Tony,

I find comfort in thinking of the beautiful or significant moments and in music. Write your song about your mum anyway, just get it out of you. It doesn't really matter what people think about it. It's what you think that matters....and I'll help if you need a voice, bro. ;)
Thanx for your comments :)

Greg,

just cherish those moments and be happy. One day you'll look back and smile :). Wish you a lot more years with your dad. :)

Thanx for all your comments on the mix, I'll be reviewing it again.

Hey Joey, finally getting a chance to listen to your song. What a beautiful way to keep someone you love alive. As the ending of the song says, you still feel him beside you... totally diggin' it.

I do have one suggestion... (sorry :o ) but I think the vocal in the very beginning should be treated differently than the rest of the song. A little less effects and a little more in-your-face. Then slide into the current mode for the rest of the song.

Love the harmonies... as always!!! :)

Peace brother,
