King of Bling
Hey...I posted this song weeks ago with a minimal treatment. I'm building it like an igloo...

Any thoughts appreciated.

[edit] -I changed the link to remove the over the top reverb that some of the posts talk about. I suck.

killer man, i love it. i kinda wish the crash came out a tiny tiny bit more in the first chorus. but that might just be me being picky i have no idea. but other than that i love it. killer voices, killer tune.
who sang this and what mic was use on the vocals, if you don't mind me asking?

Very groovy, Chris! :)
Beautiful song, love the voice and the harmonies. I really dig the simplistic approach with just acoustics, bass, drums, voices. Still sounds very full and complete. Recording is pristine.
Well done!

Joe :):):):)

My two cents FWIW -

There isn't much depth to the mix. Also, the back vox need to come out more. I'd try setting up a pretty big hall, sending the back vox to it pre-fader pretty heavy, and pull the fader on the channel way down. Make them big and haunting. ;)

Thanks very very much for listening...

1. The singer/songwriter is David Ramirez.

2. The drummer is "TMIX" from around the interwebs. Super guy with a studio in Fort Worth who has sent me drums for 3 of the 4 tunes I'm working on with David.

3. The backups are my daughter.

4. I am on a mission to keep David from recording a country album, which is what he wants to do with these songs...he has studio time booked in Nashville beginning in February.

5. I agree about the 2D nature of the mixes...I think some really minor additions (electric fills, maybe accordian or Viola?) would help a ton.

I'll work on the verb...it's funny that you used the exact word that my daughter and I used when we were trying to describe what we were going for...nailed it in exactly one place in the mix...

thanks a ton for the comments...I'm going to be working on this for the next couple of days to try to get them all done before the weekend, so much MUCH thanks.

The singer/songwriter is David Ramirez, and I recorded his vocals and his guitars with an AT4050, to a firepod, to my laptop.

I think he's fantastic, and if I'm honest, I'd have to work pretty hard to screw these songs up, but it's not impossible, that's for sure.

Oh, and I'm turning up the overheads, so thanks.

I'd take the sleeping bag out of the kick drum........

and add more accordian and maybe a pinch of cowbell.

The only thing that hit my ears funny was the reverb on the bkgd vox when they first come in. I like the fact that they are lush... the delay thing works, but those first moments of it were jarring in my cans (HD280 pros).

I thought "Gomez" at moments listening to this, which is a big compliment.

Great arrangement.

It's heartening to know that this was done with a firepod, which is all the interface I'm going to have now or in the forseeable future.

Chris,
Is the softer guitar in the intro a delayed effect of the other? It sounds like it's a heavily cut & then delayed of the 1st.
B vox are cool -
This song would become bad done Nashville.
Nice capture.

Hey, just wanted to pop in and say I typically love the stuff you post, but with this one I don't really like how wet everything is. I saw someone suggest more of a hall type thing, so I was wondering what it was like before. The drums seem a little choked to me for his style, but maybe I would like them if there was more going on? Just some thoughts, your stuff always sounds great, and I've listened to that "like her" song alot the past week...it's great.

first...thanks very much. Next, I'm definitely having 2nd thoughts about the reverb, but it's almost like I think I need to post it with a lot less to let you guys know what I'm talking about...this particular song seems to require me to do it differently than I'm used to; I mean, I almost never use a lot of reverb, and I have absolutely used a TON on this mix, but...well...I think I'll do another mix if anybody'll listen.

Stay tuned, and thanks a million for the feedback. It sincerely means a lot to me, and I think it'll help this artist.

No...there's some delay on the reverb...which was probably a bad call, LOL...but those are 2 guitar tracks all the way through.

I couldn't agree more...but what do I know?

trying to take some more of the comments here. Mostly, I made adjustments to the reverb...I increased the diffusion and killed some of the midrange of the reverb to try to make it sound less cheap...I also totally muted early reflections. Did some stuff to the bass. I'm losing perspective, lol.

Headphone mix, so who knows, lol. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR LISTENING.

headphone listen to the new mix

Raising the dampening did a lot for the emotional feel. The lyrics are about a guy who's pulling away from his girl, I think, withdrawing...

The dampening through that first verse as it builds to the chorus is audible... like it's actively pulling the reverb back into the silence. It fits the message of the song. I can see this dude recoiling from his crying girlfriend.

Of course I'm reading into it, but I do like it better.

I have not yet heard the ending, though-- it keeps cutting off in what I guess is the last chorus. "Network Error."

?

First, thanks a ton for listening again. Secondly, it seems to suck if you try to stream it. Can you try downloading it? Although, if I'm honest, not much different happens sonically, lol.

+1,000

Sounds awesome! I echo the bass drum and cowbell suggestion above.

He don't listen to me... I'll throw a banjer on there to ruffle his feathers now and then too. I might even have to "force fit" this song in the Nashville tradition too, since I live so close to music city. But then, I don't have the EZD nashville expansion pack yet :D
