would you use them in any of your songs?

I love the trumpet and trombone but I don't play them and it would take too long to get good.

I have some REASON sampled ones and am debating whether or not they sound like crap.

just trying to get the opinions and advice of the experts as I am certainly not one.

If it sounds good to you then use it. If it doesn't, then don't. Look at how many 80's pop songs are still on the radio....cheap keyboard drum beats.

Dude, seriously. I know I'm coming off harsh, and I admit it might be because there seems to be an influx of major idiots here lately (not you, but you may be getting the brunt of my lack of patience).

But, consider your question. You want other people to decide whether YOU should like something or not. Even a horn player from Tower of Power can't decide something like that for you. Beginner or expert, it doesn't matter. You have to not be so lazy and stop asking questions that you should be deciding for yourself.

I mean, do you really want to be stupid, fat, ugly, AND lazy??? You're going to start running out of reasons to live.

Even crappy horn samples can sound ok. The trick is to play the samples like a player would. Understand the range of the instrument being sampled and keep your sample lines within that range. Trumpets don't generally bend alot of notes....trombones can and sometimes do. Play a sax patch like a sax player would not like a trombone player would or, God forbid, a keyboard player would.:p Also, consider building multiple tracks of sampled instruments...a horn section.
Listen to some horn-centric music and let your ears learn how they sound together.
I've pulled off some pretty decent tracks using really bad horn samples.

I say:

If it's good enough for the Wu Tang Clan, it's good enough for you...

...to sound like the Wu Tang Clan.

Cheap crappy samples aren't a problem, they're a style. ;)

Good God, don't answer the question then. no need for a tizzy

there's been plenty of times when I thought something sounded good and I took it to my friends and they said is sounded like s^%& and so I reconsidered and chose someting different, which I was happier with in the long run.

I didn't know I was annoying you so bad. I do my research: I've read 5 protools books; I have one on mastering and studio design aswell, but I still have questions, that's why I'm here on this forum - trying to make some friends - not enemies and I'm very sorry to you, sir. But, I don't need you taking your frustrations out on me, over a simple question like: do your expert ears tell you that sampled horns - in this age, are technologically advanced enough - for you to be willing to use them in your songs?

your first post was plenty to let me know that I should do more research and experimenting, before posting. But, sometimes it's nice to just come here and throw something out for discussion. We are interacting and the best forums are the ones where there's something new on it everyday.

Based on your post which stated this:
I.....am debating whether or not they sound like crap.
I stand by what I said:

But, I'll let you continue to ask other people to think for you.

Besides the fact......you didn't even thank or acknowledge anyone's else's attempt at helping you in this thread, which shows that you're stupid, fat, ugly, lazy, AND selfish.

Have a good one. :)

Arguments aside,

yes, you can use sampled horns effectively. Coming from someone who was recently told on the mp3 mixing forum "your brass sounds fake" I can relate to what your saying. I find it good when people point out realism flaws in my instruments, because it means I am doing something wrong, hence can improve.

What a previous poster said about learning the sonic range of each member of the brass family, as well as the articulations they commonly play will all go a long way to helping.

The staccato trumpet on Reason 3 is lovely from what I remember, although it was a while ago I heard it.

I wish i could get some horns to sound real for me in fruity loops... It's all i've got sequencer-wise, and i'd LOOVE to pull out some ska/punk. Any suggestions on samples?

(not meaning to hijack the thread, but it kinda goes along with it methinks.)

O boy... I play trumpets and keyboards. I guess I suck the big one.

Horns are bad enough, keyboards are worse. Horns from a keyboard are grounds for justifiable murder. :D :D :D

It's a God-given scientific fact that any and every song ever made sounds 37% better with the addition of a horn section, 32% better with the addition of at least one keyboard, or 28% better with the addition of a cowbell. Addition of a slide whistle, however, makes it at least 45% worse.

:D
