Hi,

I'm pretty new to studio hardware and music software and was wondering if I could get a little help in regards to the hardware/software that I've purchased or will be purchasing soon.

The list thus far is:
Macbook Pro 2.5/4 gig - Purchased
Logic Studio - Just purchased
NS10m Monitors - Purchased (Still in Box)
General monitors speakers - Purchased (Will check brand, but seem good)

The rest is what I'm planning to buy:
NI Komplete5
MOTU 828mk3
AMP (for NS10s - Need advice)
Midi controller - Need an 88 key weighted controller with no onboard sounds ,good key action and no or minimal knobs etc.

Gear that I'm going to sell or stop using:
Edirol UM-05 I think.. This will be replaced by the MOTU firewire interface.
Kurzweil k2000 will be replaced by the weighted midi controller.

That's about it.

I'd really appreciate some advice and suggestions.

Thank you.

for the midi keyboard look at the keystation 88 es by m-audio. I have the 61 key version.

btw, i don't understand whats good about the 828mk3? it's only got 2 mic inputs.... so you need a pre (or two) to record drums right?

Thanks Tojo..

I don't know what's so good about the 828mk3. I put in on the list because I've read it's the best for the price. I'm not recording any real instruments except the mic ( Which I need advice on also;).

Regarding the keyboard, I need something fully weighted. I looked at the keystaytion Pro 88 but it's got too many onboard dials etc..

I was talking about the keystation 88es

although it's semi weighted. I don't know where your going to find a weighted one with not many dials.
and your only using 1 microphone ? Why spend $750 on an 828mk3 when you could own something smaller like the ultralite by motu and do a similar thing. I guess you should only get it if you need that many inputs... Do you record drums? If so maybe the motu 8pre would be better... But if you need a lot of outs I guess you should stick with the 828...

good choice with logic pro though

Sounds like you're off to a good start. I also have a MacBook Pro and Logic Pro 8. Good choice on NI Komplete 5. Sounds like you just need some mics. If you go with the M-Audio 88-key MIDI controller, you'll certainly be on your way.

I would definately get familiar with operating MIDI in Logic Pro. It's user friendly and easy to use.

Best of luck :)

Thanks Jeremy.
I ended up going with a Yamaha p85 for the 88 weighted keys.
Also, it's such a huge bonus for me not having to turn everything on when a composition comes to mind as per the inbuilt speakers which actually sound pretty damn good for what it is.

So now, I spend most of the time on the Yamaha just composing and only turn to logic when I'm ready to record via midi.

That leaves the midi interface.
I'm still trying to decide between the MOTU Ultralite or the 828MK3.
I'm leaning towards the 828 though.. Going to make the purchase within a few days I think.

OH and looking for a good price on the Ni komplete5 as I have run out of funds as per the above purchases:)

I am disappointed with my current monitors though.. Seem very bassy. Might get an amp and try the NS10's.

Thanks again.

The 828 is nice if you can afford the extra price. They are the same sound-wise (both recording up to 192kHz due to their firewire connection). I think the 828 has 30 outputs and the Ultralite has 14, if I'm not mistaken. All really depends on how many simultaneous tracks you need to record at once. I've used the 828 before, and it has some nice sounding effects in it.

Hmmm I owuld get a firepod over the motu and you need good mics so im guessing you have a nice selection since its not on your buying list.

NIKomplete I think can wait and its very expensive and logic already comes with a nice selection of effects and virtual instruments.

For a midi controller i would look at the yamaha p70. It can be hooked up through midi cables and it has nice sounds already and has very nice hammer action keys.
