Well, I finally managed to finish a new song, my first new one in two years! For those that remember me posting a thread about a friend's daughter's amazing art; this song was inspired by that. She drew me a gorgeous interpretation of Tinker Bell from J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, and when I asked what I could do in return, she responded "Art for art; write me a song!" So, I harnessed my Swannanoa mojo, and here's my first shot a folk instrumental. Thanks to the amazing John Kelly (http://www.johnkelly.biz) for the guitar solo in the middle.

This is the finished version of my other thread recently, the guitar solo is added, and I did narrow the field on the congas a bit, as well as adding a bongo line...

Yes, this sounds very good. As I mentioned the previous time, I like the wide panning of the percussion, which was not coming through on myspace.

Your pal does an excellent job on his solo, it really fits in with what you have. A very mellow listen, very nice.:)
 
mspace players & compression really are below par. I keep a presence on there for connections' sake but the sound isn't anywhere near acceptable.
Nice work on the additions, very mellow as said - I half expected Michael Franks to start singing any moment. The piece certainly doesn't need a voice though as it holds its own.

Nice melodic jazzy feel to this.
I would put the solo more towards the middle, because it's the main instrument in the song. Percussions sound cool.

I think that in this case, it comes from having laid down the percussion after the fact; I played the guitars to a loop first while I was waiting for the percussion instruments to ship from Muscian's Friend... :) I don't know if being a drummer and bassist first has anything to do with the overall rhythmic accuracy, since there are zillions of guitarists that have great rhythm...

I narrowed the congas significantly, still panned out, but they were really out at the edges on the last iteration....
 
OK, after 2nd and 3rd guessing myself, I decided I didn't like the last mix. I redid it; gave the strummed 12-string a more proiminent voice, took some of the uper mids out of the melody, narrowed the stereo field on the congas a bit more, toned down the busy bongo part, fixed the big rhythm clam in the melody, and just generally smoothed things over better. The chordal work in the bass resonates better too, I think. I'm very happy with this, the FINAL mix:


(This is a 256kb encoding, I want you to be able to really HEAR; sorry for the 7MB size!) I also uploaded a new mix to Myspace, and did my own 96kb encoding to see if it goes in unadulterated and sounds better than their last crapy one...

Anyway, enjoy it! I had a blast with this genre...

Okay...I found it at the older link--Faeries was misspelled in the latest post. But the file size is 7.2mb so I know its the latest...

This is beautiful. I think I said this about this song before, and I really mean it: so often I listen in the clinic with a clinical ear--how's the mix, how's this, how's that. But not this one. It's pure beautiful music, and I'm just listening to it like I'm listening to a new CD I just bought. I can see why you had fun such fun with it! It shows!

Well, I love the counter-point of the rythm between the percussion and the guitar. Everything sounds great. Reallu love the depth in the sound of the percussion, and the panning. Is that a wah or a phaser on the guitar??? Everything sits in it's place so nicely in this, it's very soothing. Great job, brother.
 
What Rami said. Very nice textures and shit. If you had to describe "sonic landscape" to someone, this would be it. Very nice job. :)

It's a phase-shifter; I was going for a little Grant Geissman-esque sound... :) Thanks, man!!

I've discovered that while percussion loops are nice, nothing substitutes for the real deal...
