Good preamp for my situation.

I'm looking to start recording with an SM57 miking my speaker cab. Til this point I've been using a Palmer speaker sim into an emi 6/2. I've been told I need to get a preamp to start miking and was wondering what I need to get a really good guitar sound for a wide variety of tones. Don't want to spend more than I need BUT dont want a POS either that I'm not going to be happy with either. So basically something really good but relatively affordable?
 
Give us an idea of how much money you want to spend on a preamp?
 
Dont really have a set price, I want something that will work well and be affordable if possible. Would definitely like to keep it under 500 if possible
 
If you have $500.00 my vote would be the ever popular RNP. Many reviews on this site that you could search but it is a good quality pre.
 
I've got numerous cheap to mid pres, and my favorite for recording electric guitar is the ART MPA Gold. (It's 2 channels, too.) It's a tube pre, and at $300 you'd have room to updgrade tubes if you were so inclined.

It's got variable impedence which I find really helpful to tweak the sound of a mic'd cab on the way in.

I use if for a good chunk of vocals too, so it's not a one trick pony.

Strat has posted some of his electric guitar work here, and it's very high quality. The RNP is also very good. I've owned both of them and they are both good pre's for the money. The ART will probably be better for guitars. The RNP will probably be good on a wider variety of sources, including guitar.
 
You should go for 2 channels at least...one for that 57 off axis of the speaker...and a LD condencer for 5' away...I use the Line6 UX8 for a preamp...I havent seen anything top it for under 500 bucks...and it is an 8 channel preamp.
