Hi
I'm thinking about getting a Powerbook 1.67Ghz 2GB ram as it's so cheap and will allow me to take it out live. How is the CPU issue? Will i suffer? I do use software synths and reverbs (usually not convolution stuff though)

I've read about people not being able to run more then a few audio tracks and several eq's but my guess is that they are just newbies and don't know how to configure the machine.

read the software specs of logic. at leaset a 1.25 ghz machine. I guess you should be okay. Don't push it too hard.

you'll run into issues with the software instruments. you'll probably be ok if you can freeze them.

if you can get any of the Intel Macbooks or Macbook Pros for a good deal you'll fare much better....

The G4 was a very underpowered laptop compared with any of the current offerings. How cheap is cheap?

Cheap is around 700$

I wouldn't even consider it for that. If it were $400, maybe. $899 will buy you a factory refurbished current-generation MacBook from Apple. It doesn't make sense to pay 80% of the cost of a brand new machine with a full factory warranty to buy a machine that has no warranty and was relatively slow two or three years ago when it was new.... :)

The MacBook makes the G4 laptop look like a snail in pretty much every respect....

i guess its not worth it, i just hate the macbook design. perhaps i'll shell out for the black model.

You might wait a few weeks, then. The rumor sites have been hinting at new MacBook designs for a couple of weeks. Of course, they said PowerBook G5 Next Tuesday for all of two years, so they could just be on crack. Hard to say. :D
