It arrived today, ordered it with Playback in France on monday, pretty quick delivery, nice. Unit looks nice, though the power switch (left front) and all the potentiometers (right front) appear a bit fragile due to the fact that both seem not to be attached firmly to the front, they move a little.. I'll see if I'll try to improve on that later.. not sue. Does not matter too much I guess.. Its a realtively cheap unit.. 400 Euros. It has 8 mic inputs, 2 instrument/line inputs on front and another 4 inputs (line) at the back, all ballanced and except for the four on the back all with gain control on the front.. I noticed that when recording drums 8 inputs is a bit tight and leaves no room for under-snare, hih-hat, ride, room (stereo) mics at all, which limits the mixing options quite a bit.. So I decided I needed this one.. I'd like to use firewire, but my computer has no native firewire connection and also another computer I often use in a rehearsal/studio space I work in often doesn't have it. I wanted the 8-pre from MOTU (FW, just 8 ch, 550 Euros) but this woud cause some connection problems and limit again to 8 ch.. So I just jumped into it and ordered this unit.

Anyhoo.. My intention is to spend the coming week on doing some tests on it, see where the culprints might be, lowest latency, noisefloor mic-preamps, mic-preamp sound and so on.. Any tips on how to approach this?

how are you coming along with the TASCAM US-1641 ?

What's the Good and the Bad ?
What recording software are you using ?

Question: Can you use it to monitor non-recording instruments or mic's plugged in ? Let's say, you wanted to practice to the previously recorded tracks, but not record. Can you do that ?
