Also, what is DICE-II? I googled it but couldn't figure out why it seems to be commonly understood as a bad thing.....

It seems to be a firewire chipset... the chipset is the main "working part" of the electronics of any given device. I can't speak to the reasons everyone is sour on it, but thats what it seems to be.

If you are going up to around 1,500.. I'd say 003 for Pro-Tools.. RME for everything else..

And as far as I know, everyone (esp Pipeline :D) is sour on DICE-II because it is unstable and it has problems with different systems.. ie hit or miss as to whether or not it'll work properly for your particular comp.

But yeah.. really depends on your DAW.. RME will probably work with everything but protools and as far as I know (not that I've researched it much) the 003 only works with Pro-Tools. (right?)

http://www.esi-audio.com/products/esu1808/

ive just picked up one of these from hong kong for well under 200 quid.

i got it for the same reason of being tired having to repach all the time and also recording several line sources at once.

havent acctually got back to my studio yet to play with it but an SOS article had some basic system recording 16 simultaneous tracks with it and they had no issues with the overall quality of preamps ect....

wow, that esu1808 looks like quite a deal. Are there any downsides to it? I currently have an echo layla 24/96... I'd be looking to upgrade... would it be an up or downgrade as far as sound quality from the layla?

well...it sounded alright in the store but i didnt a/b it with anything else.

the guys in the store seemed to consider the quality on par with m-audio which they also sell.

it is designed in germany and built in china so the price makes sense...i would imagine the likes of motu would be better but who knows??

...oh yeah downsides from sound on sound were that it only has one midi in and out and the power button is on the back....which for a rack system unit is bizzare....so you can see the lengths they need to go to to pick holes in it.

bump....

Hoping peole continue to contribute on this thread.

It seems the more I research, the more options I have that seem like they could be viable, and the more confused I get!

Well, I've been using a layla 24/96 for years. Really, since high school. It has been almost entirely reliable. Whenever I need it, it's right there rocking my PCI slot and giving me very low latency.

I had gone in a studio as a young'n and it was running its core on an event layla. I asked about it and he said it was PCI... So, I went out and got me a newer one. That was six or seven years ago. Since then the 3g and now their audiofire have come out. I'd love to give the audiofire a try.

However, more inputs are always welcome. The Tascam US1641 has caught my eye because of its extra channels and USB 2.0 and with the release of USB 3.0 coming soon USB consoles like this may become more prevelant... Especially considering USB 3.0 will still beat out the bandwidth of the new firewire.

That ESI console, however, has made me think twice about just going out and getting an ADA8000 to add tracks to my layla.

well i have played around with the eusi808 and as promised it does what its says it will do.

i could feel that as i put the jacks in that it was hardwired to the board rather than the case...so its a budget job...no suprises there.

but at this moment in time i could have shelled out a whole lot more for some quality kit but in the back of my mind i didnt want to because at this price point i can afford to upgrade more often and not feel the pain.

i say this having bought a lot of exspensive redundant gear in the past that is now gathering dust because technology has moved on so fast and whats on offer now is so much better and cheaper.

i can now finally record my ob dmx to all 9 tracks at once ..and then leave all my modules just plugged in and ready for when i want to do something.

to my ears the difference between digital interfaces these days is not great and as a songwriter rather than song recorder its no biggie anyway.

one issue that played on my mind was wether to go for the mixing desk option with fw/usb out....i felt that i always ended up eq ing it it in the box...and i dindt really have the real estate to lend to a desk anyway.

also a lot of the options offerd onbord effects which put the price up ..but i wanted to keep it all real simple.

it was all about the workflow.....i needed to see a clear path to how i would really use it..no distractions or complications.

just my thoughts on what is at the moment a really confusing market.:)

a perhaps unavoidable trade off's . . . DiceII reduced jitter, but has some side effects for 'inside the box' mixing, monitoring . . . one of the side effects is a constant, fluctuating stream of CPU usage spikes. According to TC Electronics and Wavefront these spikes are an artifact of logging protocols

And the spikes appear with a lot of firewire devices

The RME cards and drivers seem to not present the problems associated with DICE II and still have, next to Apogee, 'best' clock available at affordable prices

I have experienced no DiceII issues tracking (18-24 tracks with old computer hardware) and as most of my mixing is analog and the CPU spike to not seem to impact the maths of the things I need (mixdown for example) the DiceII chips have not been an issue for me

in fact while I have used presonsus gear with and without DiceII (didn't know that firepod was not DiceII until another post here) have never noticed a significant difference in performance (don't own presonus gear but do own Alesis IO 26)

A RME option should be available for the $1500 budget

Can I point out that the Presonus Digimax FS isn't an interface, its just the preamps + AD/DA with only ADAT i/o. You would need another interface or soundcard with ADAT in order to use it.

The tascam us-1641 is cool, idk if the pre's are good becouse i use dynamics, it comes with cubase wich is pritty good but it can work with other programs like logic pro. it has 16 imputs, midi, that new digital audio out thing, monitor outs, and 4 headphone outs. I think this rack will be great for my band besides the price.

Good add on for the RME fireface 800 if you want more outs and pres on a budget

I've had good results with a Mackie Onyx mixer / firewire card.

The PC does nothing for a quality of recording, as long as there's enough horsepower.

Seriously, the FireFace blows away everything else you've listed.
I second this. Now I just need to purchase a new house so I can build a proper studio with acoustic treatment to justify the upgrade from my Aardvark Q-10 :D

If you have any intention of sharing your recording sessions with a professional studio,
Go Digi Design

I assume that the firepod i just bought = firestudio firewire.

Im still a newb, and still 'practicing' on using the device/software.

I bought it off of ebay and it cost me $310 (CAN) by the time it got to my door. I'm really happy with it so far. I was told that the pre-amps on all the channels are 'good' so I didn't have to worry about buying other gear. And if I want to expand later on I can just add another one to the chain to give me 16 inputs.

probably all old information, but that's what my experience has been so far.

...I'm sort of stuck with Vista so whatever I get is going to have to be dependable with it...

you can download windows 7 for free (until next year) I don't know if it will solve your issues, but I've heard good things about it. It's vista, but lighter and faster.

Adding to the confusion

Really glad this post is here to, and I'm sorry but I have to add my scenerio to the confusion:

I record bands from time to time at a friends loft in an area of San Francisco where there are no neighbors around to bother :)

Until now, for most projects, I would haul my most prized piece of gear for the sessions, my trusty Tascam 388 1/4 inch 8 track recorder, and we would run some PZM mics for drums and 57s on all the instrument cabinets direct into the 8 inputs, hit record and go. I am always amazed with the results, as you can never go wrong with a properly maintained tape machine.

I am seriously considering making this a much more regular occurrence in order to earn some ancillary income. But I don't want to leave my 388 at my friends loft (who is a DJ and has rowdy parties regularly) and I am sick of having to cart the thing back and forth from my pad since it weighs like 150 lbs.

So...here is what I am on the market for: a portable digital recording solution with 8 balanced in, and 8 balanced out.

My caveat from the original poster is that I already have a PC running Sonar 7 and a Echo Layla at home. I am not looking to buy another computer. It's a tower PC, so not portable :(

i have the presonus firestudio project and it has been working like a champ so far. Im using it on a PC with windows XP so I was expecting to have to play around with the drivers a little... but not a deal breaker. Im happy with it and it has plenty of inputs for the $$
