Hello all. I finally upgraded to a Core Duo Quad with 4gb of RAM. Very excited to record at 96k 24bit in Cubase SX. So, things were going well until I add some plugins to the mix (mostly instances of Amplitube 2), and it started stuttering. I fediddled with my latency and other settings, made sure there were no hardware conflicts, etc. When I take some of the plugins off, it seems to solve the issue. Any thoughts? I'm using an E-MU 1212M PCI interface.

Thank you in advance!

Is this something I should wait until mixing and then finalize all effects at the last minute? I assumed my setup would be able to handle this kind of realtime processing.

Anyone?

Not to start an argument but there is no good reason to track with the 96k sampling rate. Keep it at 24 bit but lower your samples down to 44k for audio only or 48 if doing video. It's a good idea to track dry and use the plugins later on if you need them.

perhaps the code for SX isn't able to take advantage of the multi cores??? as i understand it even C4 has trouble with hyperthreading under some conditions so not hard to imagine SX would have similar issues...

I use Sx with a dual core and XP with no problem. It does appear that his system should handle the plugins and there's something else going on. Maybe a OP system problem or wrong drivers?

Cubase scales fine across as many cores as are available.

I have been on sx on a quad for 5 months now and it cooks. There are no quads out with hyperthreading btw.

Check your processor scheduling and make sure it is set to "Background Services"

Thanks a lot for the replies.

I'm doing some stuff for someone else, and they have requested the files at this bitrate. On top of that, as long as my system handles it, I'd prefer to record at the highest (practical) bit rate possible.

E-MU and Windows drivers are totally up to date. For those IT people out there: the sound interface IS sharing an IRQ channel (16) with my chipset video, but after testing it, the vid system is not working nearly hard enough to cause a problem.

I checked, it should be fine.

I can record no problem with no effects. I throw Amplitube on a few tracks and everything goes crazy. If I adjust the Latency, it goes different TYPES of crazy, but...always...crazy...

cool.... i know that they dont do the hyperthreading on quads... was just useing it as an example of code compatability issues that i had heard of... grasping at straws as it were...

I missed this part of your post. Thanks - I'll see if that works.

Try increasing the latency in the ASIO settings. I have a similar problem with pops/clicks in SX with a core 2 duo and 4 gigs of ram, unless I increase it to about 5ms. I also use the 1212m card. I record at 24 bit and 44.1

Peace!

"Go to device setup, click audio bay,,, then check "Multi Processing""

This advice was on another forum. Is it checked?
