Anyone here used royer 121 ribbons. Where did you feel they excelled? Cabs, vocals, acoustics? Also, anyone compared it to the ACM ribbons? Just curious if they're worth the extra cash.

Absolutely great on electric guitar, yes! OK as overheads. Even tried an accordion recording with good results. But guess percussion would be one of the best applications, and mallets too. Haven't had the chance to use them enough yet.

I have a pair. They are great on drum overheads, guitar cabs, acoustic guitars and certain voices. I also have a pair of the ACM ribbons and they have some of the same qualities except not as nice of a high end. They are very acceptable though.

brilliant as room mics on a drum kit. Great on guitar cabs. If that's the sort of budget you've got look at Coles 4038 and Coles 4040, the latter of which is probably the best ribbon I've ever heard (and it looks great too!).

Royer has such a smooth sound to it, I really think you could make it work on just about any instrument. I would strongly encourage you to check one out, you won't be disappointed.

AEA also make excellent new ribbon mics. Worth checking out. I have both Royer and AEA. Both great modern ribbons.
