First 12-string (audio clip)

I haven't gotten used to it yet so playing is pretty sloppy and some buzzing going on...and I have no idea how to record it yet.

I took $700 with me to the guitar shop and played every 12-string in there.

This one sounded the best to me and happened to be one of the least-expensive. I got the guitar and a hardshell case for a little over $300.

It's a Washburn D10S/12.

The playing and recording both sound very nice. Has a new-age vibe in a way to it. I bought an Oscar Schmidt 12 string last year-also made by Washburn-and I am very happy with it, it plays easily and stays in tune quite well. It has an on-board piezo pickup and EQ as well as a tuner and it was about $220 or so. I converted an old Telecaster pickup so I can use it as well for a crunchy electric sound-it's a cool sound!!! The model # is OG312CEB.

I have used a set of Naiant condensor mics for recording it with good results.

Looks nice, Anfontan. A lot of the Washburns I've tried sound good...others, not so good, but I guess it's like that with all guitars. I'd be interested in hearing it if you have any clips lying around.

I'm putting the money that was left over towards a Martin 6-string. I wasn't concerned about having the best sounding 12-string, but wanted something different to put into my recordings. So it isn't the best sounding one but I am happy with it.

Next, I am going to buy an inexpensive classical guitar and then a quality Martin 6-string. Recording just got kind of boring with only one guitar to use.

(I also used the Naiant microphones in this clip ).

Must be something in the water. I was in my local guitar store yesterday trying out 12 strings as well. Substantial variation in playability and sound. I like the way older Guilds sound, but the necks are huge (at least for me with small hands). The new Guilds have much slimmer necks and seem to sound decent. I like the way Taylors play, but I've never been much of a fan of how they sound. The older Gibson B-25-12s sound pretty good, but again I have playability issues with the necks. There was even a 60s Martin D-35-12 that sounded wonderful and played pretty well but $$$$$. I may need to go back and play the newer Guilds again. IMHO Fender seems to be doing a fairly decent job with their purchase of Guild based on the product they are putting out.

I've played a few Fender acoustics...the classical one sounded really good and was only $100. (used)

I never tried one of their 12-strings though.

Playing this one will take awhile to get used to...seems I have to down-pick most stuff to get both strings to sound...and finger-picking? Forget about it...
