A question on EQing

Recently started recording with a friends band, and have finished the drum tracks. Started on guitar today and its going ok.. guits are sounding a little boxy.

so this brings me to my question. i want to try and clean them up a bit with EQing but im scared of destroying the 'precious mids' i hear so much about (spent the last 6 months on drum sound.. just gettin into the guitars)

so my question is, around what sort of frequency range are those precious mids? because i find myself wanting to cut a bit around 300-400hz.

what do you think?

those frequencies can make a mud pie if they are too pronounced. it is normal to cut a few dB here.
