Hi all,

I am currently embarking on the quest for the best tape saturation solution outside of an actual classic multi-track tape machine. (for use with ProTools on a new iMac OSX)

So far I have my options as the following:

1.) Plug-ins (RTAS) - Voxengo VariSaturator, VirSyn VTAPE, DaD Tape, Colortone Pro, Massey Tapehead, PSP Vintage Warmer or URS Saturation plug-in?

2.) Outboard Tape Emulators - Empirical Labs Fatso Jr, Neve 5042 or ATS-1 Analog Tape Simulator?

Have I missed any options?

Any and all help/opinions/experience is VERY much appreciated!

Thanks!

My distressor does a respectable job, for less than a fatso.

Re-reading the OP I guess if you were to need the best, you would need to hear all of them in your room with your program material to make a decision.

Few shops will let you do that.

I bet Mercenary Audio will. Give them a call.

I personally would go with a plugin for tape saturation, unless you are willing to spend the bread on one of those hardware units. While you might be able to simulate some sort of tape distortion with the Distressor, that's not really what it does.

Since you are on ProTools you have the good fortune of being able to use Steve Massey's "TapeHead". It's inexpensive and a really great plugin, I use it quite a bit.

UAD is supposed to have a Fatso plug in the works for the fall.
