New bass rig

Hello all - great forum you have here. I was hoping to get some direction with deciding on a new bass rig. I play a Danelectro and a Fender P-bass and want to upgrade to a tube amp with either a 2x10, or possibly a 4x10 cabinet.

I currently play on a friend's old Ampeg BN-17 and love the sound, but he's not willing to part with it, plus I'd like something with a little more volume that could work at a decent-sized bar gig and also be decent in a studio environment.

I don't have unlimited funds, but I understand this isn't going to be cheap - I'm looking for the sweet spot in terms of price/performance.

If you care, I'd love your $0.02.
 
Those new amps at Guitar Center and Musicians Friend called "Mark Bass" are awesome....their 1x10 combo puts out more sound than some 4x10's I've heard....and the heads are so tiny! Any bassist needing an amp should check them out...

Thanks, but...

I've never heard of Markbass, and I'll definitely give them a listen, but I am looking for that warm, tube sound, ala Stax and Motown.

Honestly, I'm not at all familiar with Stax, but of course I know what Motown is.... I live there :D
The thing that impressed me most about the Mark Bass amps was the fact that their 400w heads were the size of a half rack space synth module (no kidding,) and the way that the amp power supply always had enough power and headroom to pick up every nuance of the player's performance, and give it clear thumping definition. All those grace notes come out loud and clear. I love it!

Its a high efficiency class d design, weighs almost nothing. Excellent concept for those who like to travel light but need a good deal of power.
