No way to check the console out...

Got some very detailed pictures...was used by a radio station and has been in dry storage for awhile...needs cleaning up but it doesn't appear to be dented/banged up at all, just dingy. Lots of lables and label goo on it. Missing two fader knobs, all other knobs/knob caps are there. Couple bent fader shafts...

Includes manual, just no power supply.

Is it a crazy idea to build a power supply for this console? Would it end up being an expensive deal to get a console untested (assuming it will need some work) and then have to build a PS for it?

i wouldn't let the lack of a supply keep me from it... but then i can build one from scratch... there are options.... there's a real good company called powerone that makes modular supplies... just have to buy 3 of them and mount in suitable box... +/-18V and 48V.... as to what it worth though... hard to say... especialy since ya cant hear it... i know of a 12 channel one locally that's asking $250....been thinking of buying it myself...

They haven't set a price, they're just accepting offers.

I can solder stuff together, but definitely don't have the knowledge to design anything...

I would not buy that console,...

'cept for parts or unless they just gave it to me.

I'm not one to DIY a power supply and cable, but for those who do I wish the best of luck.

Long story short: I have too many project boxes already, and this one's not a slam dunk, either.

Every once in a while you'll see a PS-520 floating on eBay by itself, but that still begs the issue of the cable, with the unusual (out of date) 20-pin connector.

Loved the board in its day, but I wouldn't buy one without a power supply. Ask them to give it to you because I don't think anyone will buy it. If you got it for free you wouldn't have to rush to build a supply and could wait for one to appear on Ebay or elsewhere. The current owner obviously doesn't need it. Besides, if you got it for free you could feel guilty again.

i use a m520 with my 58-ob. I love both machines to death.
it's a shame the power supply is missing.
the manual for the 520 is indeed excellent. it's got some great general technical info on recording.

I would have to pass on an M-520 without a PS. A couple things worry me. Did the PS get fried and possibly fry something in the board as well? Was the PS salvaged for a working board and the 520 they’re selling is leftovers. Either way, you won’t know how much is wrong with it or if it works at all until you find or build a PS. The PS is pretty hard to find these days.

It’s unfortunate because that’s a nice console.

Well folks, I'm going to heed your wise advice and pass on it. I haven't heard from the guy since I started asking all sorts of questions. If I do hear back from him then I may make a silly low offer on it, but you're right...*why* would the PS not go with the console? I did send an email to the former owner, a radio station, to see if they had a clue...haven't heard from them either. I don't think the owner is going to let it go for nothing as they are forwarding the proceeds to a family in need. $0 ain't too good in proceeds.

Daniel, that is precisely where I got my original 48 and my 58 for $250, in Bellingham (suburb of Seattle), and that's also where this M520 is located.

So is the M500 series that much better than the M300 series?

Yes, night and day. 8 buss vs. 4 buss. 16 track monitoring vs. 8 track monitoring. better eq. I think the 500 series has more sends (it's been a while).

Sorry, Richard et al...I wasn't very clear with my closing question on my last post.

I'm familiar with the differences in routing architecture and I/O features/differences between the M500 and M300 series...I guess what I'm really wondering is regarding that ugly somewhat subjective question about which one performs better sonically?

Do they share the same pre's?

And here's another somewhat on-topic question: does anybody know from where the pre's in my MX-80 rackmount 8-channel preamp are derived? 200-series? 300-series? 500-series? None of the above?
