New Computer Recording Setup

Just finished building a computer to go from digital outboard recording to computer recording. Need help with sound card, interface device, and good recording software. Have heard so-so feedback with the Presonus and Firebox. Would like to have more than 2 ins. I've been looking around would be grateful for some info from people who actually use the stuff versus the promo hype. Anyone have any thoughts?

AMD 64 x2 Dual Core 5000+ 2.6 GHz
3 GB RAM
10,000 RPM Raptor Hard Drive
XP Pro
2 - 256 MB GeForce Graphics Cards (linked)

Currently use the Fostex 16 trk digital with 24 channel Behringer mixer.

I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Well if his mobo doesn't have onboard he'll need one otherwise his computer won't be much use :-p Agree that SLi/Crossfire is a it overkill for an audio box though.
 
Okay, can easily remove one card. Assumed I would use multiple monitors for a larger workspace and gain increased response without taxing the CPU. What about the E-Mu 1616?? If I try to record the band, 4 instruments at one time, will this work?

MOFO Pro meant get rid of graphics cards with fans. Get a single quiet one with a heatsink--and one that will support dual monitors if needed--but I don't think it is.

You can always replace those GFX cards with ones that don't have fans.

Gigabyte do some good ones.

Are you worried about the physical noise the fans make? Cuz you can always isolate a PC.. Or does the mechanics of the fan cause enough interference/noise in the circuitry itself to affect devices on a firewire/usb bus?

Yes the physical noise of the fans... You just don't need that kind of graphics horsepower on a dedicated audio box... so why bother... there's a number of dirt cheap dual monitor cards with no fans on the market that will perform cooler and quieter...

...and an iso-box is a fairly expensive solution for components that aren't really needed
 
Okay - I get it guys. Thought I could multi-task the machine to do both music and video. No prob. Appreciate the insight into fanless graphics cards. BUT, currently have no audio card or outboard gear . . . . so . . . any suggestions down that path?

Thanks MoFo Pro - Two different areas - want to get some of the stuff already recorded on outboard gear onto computer for edits and overdubs. Also, would like to record the band in a live type setup.

Have looked at some of the bundles with a card and software. Spoke to someone yesterday who told be I didn't really need a card if I have software, just firewire or USB from pre-sonus type unit.

I was probably looking at final cost around $500.

M-Audio Delta 1010 will give you 10 ins and 10 outs.
and would be better suited for what you are trying to do.
