What do you guys think of these specs for new pc for sonar 5,motu2408, 2 uad-1 cards. Im not that good with processors and chipsets etc.Seems to be as cheap to buy as to build...or am I'm off.
Thanks

What brand/model Hard drive, ram and motherboard? ie 2gb of ddr2 800 corsair ram isn't the same as 2gb ddr2 800 of a-data ram. Also maybe I'm a newb, but I thought that quadcore cpu is a 64bit processor, and xp is a 32bit o/s?

q6600s can run 64bit software but that doesn't mean they can't run 32bit. you can use 32bit software on any hardware, it doesn't make much difference.

the only thing i'd want to find out about that system is the motherboard and chipset. if it's only cheap RAM you can buy decent 2gig kits for around £40 these days so you can always upgrade.

I know it CAN run, but wouldn't you be wasting your money? like getting 4 gigs of ram and running xp?

Yes with the ram, no with the quadcore. They run just as well on xp. if he was getting 4gigs of ram then yeah it'd be a bit of a waste but cpus don't care if you're running 32bit or 64bit on them, they're pretty much the same for all intents and purposes.

That setup will run great with sonar 5. I have had nearly the exact setup you have spec'd, except for the quad core. I use a core 2 duo with 5, and upgraded to Sonar 6, which is designed to run with a dual core processor. I can get around 60 tracks with tons of plugs until dropout at 24/44.1. I also have the Motu 24 i/o with 2 uads. I use 2 monitors with sonar. One for track view and the other for console view and to pop up plugs. Another thing you can do is buy another hard drive dedicated to audio. You will get a better performance when you have your audio seperated from the main drive, which is working with programs and what not. Nice setup for sure. You could get 2 more sticks of ram in there too.;)

Not at all. Windows will utilize all the cores as well as any software that is designed for multiprocessing (i.e. Cubase, Sonar, etc)

I stand corrected. I was under the false impression a 32 bit o/s and 64 bit processor would work, but not yield any better results.

No, that is true. But a quad is a quad, 4 cores will be used by the OS regardless of which OS (XP32/VISTA4 etc) is used. What you are probably thinking about is using 32bit applications on 64 bit windows. You can do it but you do not gain anything really since the rules about 32bit software still apply. To fully get the benefit of 64bit you need both a 64bit OS and native 64bit software

I would also suggest getting 2 hard drives rather than 1. If you have a large sample library or other static data which you'll be reading during tracking, it can theoretically make a big difference to not have to split a single drive between your recorded audio and streaming in sample data.
