Oddly shaped room

Will be primarily used for live recording.

Low budget and five million corners/edges to treat. What to treat first?

1) Notice the slanted ceilings - makes for a lot of edges.
2) Notice the cubby holes (mostly empty - one has several doors
stacked together inside it)
3)Notice the chimney, all bricks. Guitar amps stacked in front of it.
4)Have two 12" JBL speakers used as P.A. on the floor, currently
on either side of the chair by the window. Seems a good spot for them.
6) Currently have 3" acoustic foam wedges running up the ceiling behind the drums in a checkerboard pattern, has some effect- the guy who sold them to me (36 square feet for $90) wants to buy them back for his jam room - should I get rid of them and use the $90 to buy some bales of Roxul safe'n'sound and make baffles (stuffing 4" down to 2")?

I want to avoid fibreglass - the Roxul seems a good idea to me, getting the regular stuff and then compressing it into 2 or 3 inch baffles.

Any suggestions? (sorry no camera!)

This is what i'd do. This took me ages! Trying to work out the angles etc. :p

When mixing i'd move the gobo panels to the back wall and close the curtains.

I would sell that stuff back, and i'd use rigid fiberglass. Compressing your own material is a bad idea(unpredictable results). You can get really good materials for much cheaper than oc703. I can get 10 4'x2'x2" knauf rocksilk panels for £20($39), but as long as you get something 3.0pcf or more, it should be fine. Roxul safe'n'sound seems ok, but might not be dense enough.

slacker ;)

i agree with this arrangement but would add 2 more 2-4" absorbers on the sloped ceiling on each side of the mix desk and move the other pair down a bit just to break up the ceiling more. i'd also hang the center ceiling absorbers down as low as you can comfortable have them - 8" if possible - the concave effect of the ceiling can better focus energy into the 4-6" center ceiling absorbers.

Yeah i was thinking that, but I'd already done the single panels on the slope and couldn't really change them. So i didn't wanna ruin my pic, and just left them like that.

My drawing was based on one of yours. That's a bugger to do!! I wouldn't be too bad by hand, but in ms paint it's a pain!

The centre ceiling absorbers would have to be down a bit anyway. The flat ceiling is 42" wide, and the panels 48".

wow. mspaint and a mouse! very well done. I appreciate it!
The two organs you drew look just like the two organs we have here : )

Not so sure I can get knauf stuff- but the store I work at has oc and roxul, but no rigid fibreglass in stock. I'll see what I can order.

My only problem is putting the mixing desk in front of the window. I live in a sketchy neighbourhood of town. As in downtown, two doors from a halfway house. It's alright if they hear the loud music but if they can see a desk full of gear... I'd rather have the desk on the other side of the room in front of the circuit breaker. Third floor, can't really see deep inside the room from the street.

It did occur to me to use this small niche around the corner for a bit of a booth, where you put the amps, but with the desk tucked away in there,
that whole wall where you have placed the organs is completely free of junk, so people can sit along the wall and watch. We have a bunch of pillows lined up there. Nice n' comfy, you know! It's also where the string players stand and belch their beautified misunderstandings of the world.

but I see how you've placed the panels. Paid attention to vertical corners and not the horizontal edges. We'll see in the coming weeks how this room ends up.

thanks again! cheers

Thanks :D I thought you might say that about the organs, don't know why.

oc is perfect. oc703 or 705 would be great.

For mixing, you really want a symmetrical space. I put the desk where it is, because that is the best place for it. You could put something between the desk and window so you can't see in from the street. Some absorption panels would be great behind the speakers.

I understand what you mean, but honestly this is the best way to set up this room(that i can think of). You need a large area for mixing, and this is centred along the shortest wall firing down the long dimension. It is, roughly, 38% of this dimension, and the absorption panels i suggested(including gullfo's suggestion) are in the right places, imo.

The organs can be moved anywhere, as can most things, only the mixing desk and the absorptions panels should stay where they are. I'd suggest building a few more gobo traps that can be placed anywhere(around instruments) when tracking.

I'm still working on finding some 703. I asked around at my work, and even though we sell owens corning, we only sell their residential stuff and the guy said he wouldn't/couldn't order it for me. bastard. told me another place to look though.

we'll see how much this costs, and slowly build the panels, starting with the bass traps and the ceiling.

either way, I've got a much better idea now of what needs to be done.

thanks!

Glad to be of help. You don't need oc703. But just anything that's at least 3.0pcf should be fine. Although if you find an unknown product, look up it's coefficients at http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm and if it's not there google it. If even then you don't find them, contact the company and ask for them. If you don't get them, don't buy that product.

Just compare them with oc703 coefficients on bobgolds.
