If you're amenable to reducing the complexity of that kit, you could open up space. My 20x30 room is crowded enough with a 20" bass, single tom and floor tom. Ride and hats. Sometimes crash.

I record jazz, so your needs will vary, but it's worth considering shrinking down the set for certain projects.

Don't take it the wrong way-- I was originally just going to post how much I dug the kit!

dude, i just bought that kit a few months ago. i custom ordered it, it's the dream kit i've been waiting for all my life! of course it's impractical in that room, but what else am i gonna do?

glad you dig it--it's a starclassic performer. i did a thread on it in the drummers forum back in october or whenever it was i took delivery of it.

the 5-piece 1980s pearl export kit that i upgraded from fit much more easily in there, but unfortunately it was only 5 pieces (i got a thing for lots of toms) and sounded like, well, a 1980s pearl export kit.

"hey dross, downsize the kit!" oh, man that's priceless!

I didn't *really* think you had all those toms for no reason....

I saw Terry Bozzio in a GC in Queens 8 or 9 years back. The main thing I remember was sitting around while he tuned and tuned and tuned.... and tuned.

Guess I should go back to the minimalist vs. technician drum thread!

I say you should really focus on getting the best sound out of those drums, then-- I think studio building on the HR level is a matter of setting priorities and then making the right trade offs. If the drums are the main event, then design the absorbtion and diffusion of the room to help them sound their best (I'm not an expert, but some diffusion would make sense to keep it live enough to get the best sound. Mixing is important, clearly, so it can't just be a live room... and so on.

But if you really want to do crowded sessions in there, you oughta have a subset of the kit that you're comfortable playing. You could always get into overdubbing crazy tom stuff if you needed to.

oh, sessions aren't at all crowded. it's just me playing and recording everything, so all parts are overdubbed. i have an informal, slow-moving recording project with a guitarist friend of mine, but that's about it. there's no way i would even attempt to record an entire band in that room!
