Hey I havent posted here in a while really but I do lurk. Anyhow, please check out my songs and let me know what you think. I'm gonna get some monitors in the next week or so and I can quit mixing on headphones... Thank god.. Anyhow let me know what you think about these and what I could do to improve the mix. I do plan on rerecording both tracks as soon as the monitors come in so tips on what I could do in the recording process could be useful as well.

Skulls for Sale (myspace)

Thanks!

Fairly tight. The lead vocals on Favorite Son are buried and muddy, everything else is pretty clear.

cool thanks for the advice. i was thinking maybe the vocals were too bright on hide the bones so i guess i overcompensated on favorite son. do you think maybe compression would help liven them up?

Favorite Son - The song sounds kind of lo-fi. The overall mix sounds okay, but it lacks a lot of shine and polish. Kind of muddy. The kick needs a ton more "click" and presence for this genre.

Hide the Bones - Same as the other one. Kick sounds a little better on this tune. Rest of drum kit sounds worse. Again, kind of lo-fi sounding. Dark and muddy. Vox kind of buried.

Both of these songs would rock with some slicker production.

yeah i plan on completely redoing them. i used drumkit from hell on favorite son and ezdrummer's default kit on hide the bones. i need to figure out how to mix the kit pieces individually but i use dfh in fruity loops piano roll. if you have any ideas on how to do that i'd really appreciate the input. i also think my guitars sound really thin so any comments on those would be great as well. thanks again! :D

i think the lo-fi you're talking about might have something to do with the myspace conversion, i listened to em back to back and it kills tons of hi-freqs... weird.

I don't doubt that myspace mangles music, but I've heard stuff still sound decent on there. I'm thinking the mixing with headphones is where your problems lie. I don't think the guitars sound bad, they're just kind of dull like everything else. They seem to have a nice basic tone, they just don't shine through in the mix.

yeah the headphones truly do suck, but i say weird because i've noticed some songs sound outstanding on myspace while others suffer terribly. any insight as to which freqs would need tweaking to brighten things up some? i've been recording a while but i never really mix anything per-say considering my setup, but i'm collecting gear and trying to get up to par with the art now. once again thanks for the input.

I'll give it another listen tomorrow and see if I can come up with anything.
