I'M BLESSED.......
I just put a new hardrive in my desktop! I can't install programs that I have stored on Dvd's. Is it because I need to install a new DVD software program in order for it ro run? If that is the case, does it have to be something compatible to the type of Dvd drive that I have? Or is it just a preference of what type of Dvd program that I want? Reason being: I lost the original DVD software that came with the pc.

Sorry if I confused anyone. I see the importance of backing up your hardrives now! I LOST EVERYTHING and I am starting over from scratch!

Thanks and pardon the Ignorance!

Maybe you knocked somethin loose? I dunno...

Have you gone to control panel > hardware > system > device manager?

Might also help to say what DVD drive you got...

Nah bro'!
I put in a brand new hardrive, so other than the windows components and OS components, there is no other software on there.
So the dvd/r drive is not recognized!
I need to install something, I'm just not sure what! I don't know if I need to get a complete dvd/r drive w/software or if I could just get a dvd/r software program that is universally compatible to what I have in my Gateway.....I misplaced all the original software that came with it. (It's been like 7 years)
I had to go out and buy another version of XP. I thought if I borrowed a friends I could install it and use my original Code of Authenticity. NOT!!! The components from the original XP and the one's they have now are different.

I'm so confusing, I know!:p

Thanks for your response though!

Trizza,

You only need software for DVD burning purposes, not just to read a DVD that's in the drive. Windows Explorer should be able to read it just fine. My guess is that the jumpers on the drives are wrong (especially if you have 2 CD or DVD drives). You said that you just put in a new hard drive but now you can't read the DVD drive (and you had the DVD drive originally right?).

Make sure that the new hard drive is set to slave if it's being added on and master if it is a replacement for your original hard drive.

Also you may want to check the IDE cable running from your hard drive to your motherboard. I've had that one happen too where I changed the cable and it worked perfectly.

Fiev.

Dude don't even trip on that. I used to do this for a living for Dell...made for many an interesting night.

I was goin to say get Nero for your DVD burning software...

Did you replace the hard drive because the other failed? If so you must have had to install Windows. If you have an internet connection you can just go to control panel-system-click the hardware tab-click device manager. This will bring up a list of all the hardware on your system. If your DVDrom is listed, double click on it and from there click on drivers and update your driver. It should ask you if you want to use the web to look for drivers. Select yes this time only and let it find the driver for you.
If this doesn't work, go to the website of the company that made your machine and see if it have the driver there.

I was going to say what ed said...... its sounds like the drivers of your DVDrom needs to be updated because if u just got a new version of XP and installed it it will act funny with your other hardware.... id suggest also updating you interface drivers and such if you have any PCI cards in your machine

Most of the time when installing a hard drive the BIOS will provide basic drivers that work with CDROM or DVD drives.

agreed... thats why i'm surprised he got the OS installed if it did tecognize the dvd...

I'll try to make it brief:

Initially I had a virus that ate up my hardrive and I lost everything! So, I bought another copy of xp and I installed it. I was able to install many of the programs that I initially had. Now, when it came time to install other things I had backed up on DVD it wouldn't allow me. There was not an error msg, the dvd drive would attempt to load and then just stop. When attempting to update drivers, it search for a Cd or diskette. I didn't see anything that used the web as an object. I tried much of what you guys suggested and then some.
Then I came to the determination, from just being tired, that I needed to get a new dvd/r. I went to Comp USA and found one on clearance for 29.99. I installed it, along with the Cd-rom, and I and up and running like Carl Lewis!

Thanks for the help!

And if you can still suggest anything, I am curious as to what may have happened!

Hmmm....could just be malfunctioning hardware, but you may want to try the old drive with the new wires from the DVD you just bought. If those work, might have just been bad wiring...who knew...

At this point you have it working. get on with the recording!!:D
