Midi Latency only on Playback in SL3

Hi all,

I just started playing around with a Korg PadKontrol to use the DFH demo plugin (that comes with PadKontrol) and there is some weirdness. When I play with a recorded track, the sounds are triggered just fine - no delay, and I feel like I can really jam. Then, when I playback, the drums are really out of sync with the original - like a half of a beat.

With more testing, I have determined that the problem occurs also on the 909 drum VSTi and is without regard to whether the padKontrol is plugged in to the MIDI in of my interface OR via its USB connector.

I also simply went into a blank project and tapped in sync to the metronome - exact same problem.

My time is good; so I don't need to quantize (nor am I looking for a robotic sound).

With additional searching, I found that the answer lies in
Windows suckitude with emulated Midiports

The "ignoreports" file as described in this site seems to have fixed the problem.
 
I always ALWAYS have a problem with a C-hair of latency in all of my MIDI tracks. I just use that little slider with the clock on it to "fine tune" the output to the metronome.

That bugger caught me out for ages. I know what's happening - despite playing dead in time, even slowing down the metronome, on playback it's out of time?

Three words: 'Use system timestamp'. Go into the set-up, can't remember where, and make sure that this is CHECKED.

Check it out, cos it sounds like the problem I had. :)
 
Indeed it is a very distressing problem. When I first heard how out of sync it was, I thought that I must have had a stroke in order to perceive the time that poorly.

Anyway, with my set-up, the emulated ports actually work and it's the regular ports that don't work. My interface is a Yamaha i88x, which was a configuration nightmare of its own.
(went through that over a year ago, but totally worth it for the sound quality)

The timestamp checkbox doesn't seem to affect my configuration.

Where is this slider anyway? It sounds like something good to know about.

Yeah, I must have been smoking crack when I decided to take on the challenge of getting the notoriously unfriendly mLan drivers to work for the i88x. All's well that ends well, I suppose, but I wouldn't do it again - I'd get a MOTU or an Echo product.

Hmmmm ... I have an i88x and in a couple of hours am on my way down to the shops to pick up my reserved Padkontrol!!

Hope I have better luck, but having experienced the i88x drivers up close I don't suppose I will. :o

FWIW the MOTU products I've had didn't exactly have amazing Windows drivers either.

No sweat. The problem was with Cubase's handling of Midi this time, but I was basically bellyaching about my lack of luck in this general area.

See if your setup works first by tapping in time to the metronome on a blank track. It will obviously be off if you have the same problem that I did.
If you have the problem, go to that link I posted above to address step-by-step. Apparently the specific solution for your system varies with your PC's motherboard (d/t onboard clock issues).

This slider is one of the left to right moving sliders in the track inspector, which is at the far left of the screen next to the track list. It is located under the sliders for volume and pan controls. It's got an icon that has a clock with arrows pointing out to the left and right.

Hopefully I explained that right... :o

I know where to look now - thanks. I've been using SL for about 6 months now, since I picked up a used copy very reasonably on ebay. I had been using LE, but the learning curve is slower than I had thought.

I tried ticking the "Use System Timestamp" box to get rid of my MIDI play back latency but with no luck.
It says in Cubase SX3 that my MIDI device is Microsoft GS Wavetable SW synth.
Is this not a good enough device to not get latency with?

Sorry for my total lack of MIDI knowledge

I've been looking for this in Cubase and can't find it anywhere.

That didn't work for me either. Moving the file "ignore ports" up one folder level is the fix that worked for me. Good luck..

Ahh - I found it and it's a great tool to just compensate for a few milliseconds if you need. It is indeed in your picture just below the L/R balance slider in the
top track inside of the track inspector. Sorry, but I'm too lazy to circle it in a photoediting program.

One more quick question.
How do I turn the MIDI into audio?
I know I need to route the MIDI to an audio track then record it but I can't see any way of doing this and I can't find anything in the manual about it.

There are obviously a lot of options here. To get you started. Go to Vst instruments and select one of the built-in plugins, such as the LM-7 drum sound.
Then, in your midi track, under output, select "LM-7". Your input will be your controller keyboard or pad.
