You are wise, I trashed mine and have to wait for replacement and I hope I don't screw that up
Me too. I unscrewed the clamps and as I pulled the brace off, the ribbon was literally stuck to it and just disintegrated.

That happened to one of mine, too---tore along the edge of the clamp---but it had so much slack that I was able to refasten the remaining amount of ribbon.... I learned not to make that mistake again....

To avoid that, don't take the clamp screws all the way out initially. Loosen then so you can lift the back of the clamp just about a millimeter or so. Then, with a screwdriver, carefully push the back end of the ribbon away from the clamp, slowly working the screwdriver deeper.

When the ribbon falls away from the clamp at the front just a little (or if you conclude that it isn't stuck to the clamp at all), finish removing the screws.

I opened on of my ACM-3s to check the ribbon and found that it was sagging quit a bit. The upper 2/3 of the ribbon did not have any corrugation, only slight creases where the corrugation should have been. I guess I'll need replacement ribbons/motors for my mics when Chance works with the manufacturer to resolve the problem.

More modding notes -- the Edcor RMX1 transformer doesn't physically/spatially fit in the metal chamber in the ACM-4 - bummer. Hopefully there are some smaller replacement options, although the ACM-4 is certainly usable as is. While the ACM-4 was open, I visually verified what was already obvious in the audible sense: no sag. Unlike the ACM-3 and ACM-2 that I got (and awkwardly/precariously retensioned).

I successfully installed an RMX1 in an ACM-2 (subject of another short thread), and did get one into an ACM-3, but the transformer seems dead. I contacted Edcor about that, and replaced the original transformer.

double post. But as long as I'm here, I've got a transformer that I pulled out of a SM58 that has the right form factor and wires to go into the ACM-3. Is that even worth trying out? I've now soldered/unsoldered the joints in that thing so many times that I need to be more discriminating :)

No I don't THINK so. I can't remember right now, but they said (as I remember) something about "77"

Here's some quick clips of 3 of the group buy mics in action:

To be fair, the noise we heard on the 310 was probably due to insufficient warmup time.

We've already used the ACM-3 as a guitar cab mic on the new Pimpadelic album with great success.

Harvey,

Thanks for the clips and assessments. Do you have the 6802 tube mic? I bought the 583, ACM2, ACM3, and 6802 and although I haven't done thorough evaluations I've probably found the 6802 has the most uses. I'd love to hear your opinions.

Chance,

Harvey implied that you have some ACM3s left. Is this true?

Thanks!

Yeah, I have quite a few

Are you selling any now, if so are the ribbons ok? How much and how do I get a couple?

I would love to get at least one more ACM-3 but I'm trying to hold off to let those that missed the last group buy to pick some up. ...but it's hard.

I'm assuming they will be offered again on the next round. I'm also waiting for the rack mount stuff next 'round. :D

Wow Harvey Thank you so much! This gives people the opportunity to hear these things BEFORE commiting. I forgot (oldtimers desease) to pack your ACM-2 and 6802. (they were buried under the bag of foam packing peanuts) but are on their way.
I've discovered that, besides setting the voltage switch from 220 to 110, a good burn in and a 30 minute warm up before each use, really makes a difference. Your ACM-3 had no ribbon sag?

None that I could see. Before we did the sound samples, Alex used the AC3 on a lot of tracks for Pimpadelic's new album and everybody loved the sound of the mic.

It makes sense to simply record a CD wav file for each mic and let people hear the sound and where the proximity effect cuts in and the rejection, rather than just taking notes and posting results on the net.

It's also faster this way. We did the tests last night, I made a few edits (taking out a lot of "uhhh's"), normalized the files, and uploaded them today.

...i'm going to go ahead and jump into the circle of sharks here and let it be known that i'd also like another ACM-3, assuming of course that there may be one available

my wife'll kill me, but it beats me going out and getting a pair of fatheads

I'll probably have a few AMC-2s and ACM-3s left over if anyone is interested in picking some up. I was going to sell them on Ebay, but I'd rather let them go here. PM me if you're interested.

btw - Edcor was very responsive when I emailed them about what appears to be the dead transformer -- they're sending a replacement.

Harvey
Did the 310 change after burn in and warm up ? If not, PM me, Ill bring one to NAMM.

We didn't test it further. We're now getting ready for the trip to NAMM. Lemme check it again after we get back.

Yeah, I'd be interested in knowing your perception as well. I only let mine warm up for maybe 10 minutes before using them the first and only time. Maybe I'll plug em in and let them sit overnight tonight and see what they sound like in the morning.
