Hey guys,
I'm in the market for a tube pre-amp with two channels. I do mostly folky/pop type recordings. I think the tube will help give me a bit more of a vintage/analogue feel that I'm looking for. I also like to do solo acoustic stuff while playing and singing at the same time (hence the need for a stereo pre).

So, these are two that I have my eye on...

Has anyone used either of these? If so, what have your experiences been? Is there a discernable difference that might make the UA worth $400 more? Any recommendations for a stereo tube pre other than these?

Rupert Neve 5012-H Portico Duo Mic Preamp - $1,649
Universal Audio 2-610 - $2,099

Thanks!

Never used neither of those but I highly recommend the Hamptone tube pre. It's super awsome!

That Neve doesn't have tubes, but of those two that's the one I'd go for.

I think Pendulum makes a very highly regarded tube preamp that is near your price range. You also may want to look at Groove Tubes' SuPRE or Manley Dual Mono.

But are you really sure you need tubes for the sound you are going for? There are so many really great preamps in approximately that price range (around $2,000), that I'm not sure you want to limit your choices to only the models that have tubes.

You might also take a look at the Chandler Germanium, API preamps, Great River MP-2NV, or maybe the AMI TAB-Funkenwerk V-78 (which I think does have a tube actually).

My point is, a lot of people have an idea in their heads of what a "tube" sound is, but the way to get that sound may not be tubes. I personally prefer "iron" over tubes, and that may even be the vintage sound you are thinking of.

You might look at the A Designs Pacifica. Talk about cool iron.

You could get the Groove Tubes SuPre - that thing is chock full o' tubes. Damn. Can't attest to it's sound, but hey, its got tubes.

If one weren't so concerned about tubes, what would people recommend for 2000 or less for a 2-channel pre for recording acoustic instruments? I've been contemplating this myself lately (mostly omni's and LDC's, but a decent amount of gain would also be preferable in case I ever want to go ribbon :D)

Thread thoroughly hijacked. Sort of.

The Neve 5012-H Portico is a half-rack width box? Oy.

This sure looks a lot like the trhead with the exact same title further down in this section. There were some great alternative reccomendations there as well:)

Yes, have used the DI for bass and it is super sweet! Very BIG sounding. Get one and you won't be disappointed. The price is very good on them. If you can assemble it then it is even better. I can't highly recommend it enough.
