i dont know, i just found out how to use my automation on friday, all i can seem to figure out about it is, it lets me use all of my plug-ins/effects at once on a specified track..... i've been using automation for finalizing my mixdowns, as far as the technical definition, i guess google that shit.....

and not sure about enveloping, i've seen the term in my DAW, but still don't know what it means... fuck it!!!

Automation is programing parameters on volume, pan, effects, etc. to change automaticly at the point you specify in a song.
Most of the time you play the song with "record automation" enabled. As the song plays you make the changes you want, in the places you want.
Then simply shut off record autiomation and the next time you play it, the adjustments will be made automaticly just as you recorded them.

A volume envelope is a type of automation that uses a visable line that can be moved up, down, curved, etc with your cursor to control volume changes on a track throughout the song. Panning of tracks is also often done in this way.

ahh so that explains when i pan or adjust the volume from my multitrack view in AA2.0 it's considered an "envelope"

and i usually use automation during my mixing, but i think at that point it is considered an effects "buss" or something but it's the same thing you explained except i use that during the post-recording aspect of things...

Ya it's pretty much all done after the tracking. An effects buss is just a routing technique. Now you could automate your effects buss and have the level of the effects go up or down through out the song.
