Tom Volhein
sorry for the double post.

I have a couple of tunes that I have recorded and uploaded to SoundClick. These are my first recordings and mixes.

If anyone has the time, please give a listen and critique the mixes and effects.

Back Dirt Road and Cowboy Singer

Thanks

Tom

Hey Tom!
Back Dirt Road: This song has a nice feel to it. The guitar playing sounds nice to my ears through my headphones.

At this part of the song: "Cowboys high on our horses, runnin wild through the forest, our whole lives, were laid before us, hear the neigh; we were free. " I felt that the reverb thrown on that made it stick out pretty badly. I think that would have worked had there been additional complimenting instruments / or background / counter melodies introduced at that spot.
For my own personal taste, i thought the lower strings of the guitar would have been nice to hear a little more dampened, or in general a little more bass.
Nice recording though!

Thanks

I agree about the reverb. I am thinking that it is a place holder for a better effect.

Also thanks for the comment about the guitar eq. I am not sure how to bring out the bass, but I can definitely cut some of the guitar low end.

Thanks for the feedback

A good sound and song.
The bass sounds a little flabby/flappy though.
The reverb issue? A matter of taste. As a verb junky I Like It!
Needs a little something to give a clearer stereo image - may be a little sundry percussion hard panned?

Freakin love it.

Your voice reminds me of Kenny Rogers. Take it as a compliment.

The bass to me sounds like an upright bass, i dig it. Love the guitar part before the last chorus. Awesome stuff man. Keep it coming!

thanks,

I was worried about the bass. It is a Breedlove acoustic. I really nice instrument, but being an acoustic, doesn't "punch." Sounding like an upright is exactly what I want for these tunes.

Back Dirt Road....

What are you using for a mic? Condenser/Dynamic? Vocals? Guitars?

I'm a reverb junkie but usually its awash over the entire mix/song. The extra reverb is a little too noticeable for my taste.

I agree with the suggestion of some additional instruments or some different eq at that point to bring it out.

The bass guitar sounds a little thin - nicely apparent but missing that super low bottom end so prevalent with electric basses.

Generally the mix is good and well balanced. The performance is great. There are just a few items I would remix/eq to suit my personal taste.

Keep 'em coming...:D

I think the reverb's just fine. The bass I would like to have more low end. You might be able to eq some more in. I think it would fill it in. Your vocals sound very nice. When you are harmonizing with yourself(I think) it reminds me of simon and garfunkle. Very nice. Your acoustic playing and sound is very nice. Just get a bit more bass and its golden!:)
