Still a newb to mixing and whatnot. I use cubase and ezdrummer. The guitars are recorded with a Senn 609. The bass is direct. The vox are the biggest prob, i used a SM 58. I dont have any idea of how to add fx to them. On the track Good Times the vox are pretty much dry, on silver necklace the vox have some delay and compression on them. I still would like to add some background stuff to make it 'deeper'. I also would like to get a better guitar sound and mix overall. Any comments would help.
 
the vocals seemed a bit low on good times but a a pretty a good level on silver necklace. Your guitar playing and arrangement has good timing and I think youre getting some good guitar tones. Beats mine bad:). You say your main problem is your vocal sound. I think the vocals are actually coming through pretty good but a good starting point is to work on your intonation. Take your time recording your vocals and get them as in tune as you can. I like the chorus silver necklace. cool stuff. :)

The guitar sounds pretty nice, I think you have a good sound going with that. I'd keep those settings as is.

The drumming is fabulous - you've programmed that really well. Makes me want to pick up EZDrummer even more now (I'm waiting til Xmas due to $$$). The bass is a bit low (for me) even on my earbuds which are naturally bass heavy. I'd bring it up a tad.

You are correct about the vocals - they are a bit SM58-ish. They are muddy and lost in the mix on more than one occasion. Recommendations? I would maybe ride the fader on the vox getting a stable level throughout. I would also add a bit of upper mids or highs to open up the vox a bit. Make them stand out a bit more.

If you were to rerecord the vox, I would suggest you find a way to keep your mic at the same distance from your mouth all the time so the level is consistent.

Some people use a pop-filter for that. You can also pick up a new or used condensor mic - but that's a topic for the mic forum really. A 58 can give you reasonable results if eq'd just right (IMHO).
I liked the song overall - great lyrics which remind me of my younger, more fun years....:D

Silver Necklace....

I love the guitar and the drums again. The lyrics are great too... "I hope she doesn't lose it" made me LOL...

This is a bit loud - okay extremely loud....but with no noticeable clipping...interesting...what are you mastering with...maybe you can give tips in the recording forum. :D

Vocals are way better on this mix. They are louder, cleaner and more even. They still have that inherent SM58 sound but I think they are pretty good...Again I would play around with the upper register on the eq to see if you can brighten them up a tad.

Another great song here - good writing and great concept for a song....

WOW! thanks guys! I appreciate the kind words about the guitar sounds. My voice is something i've always been sheepish about, i do have a Maudio Nova cond. mic i can try to record em with. I like the Nova on my acoustic guitar, but i tended to override it with vox. Neither song has been mastered, just ripped to mp3.
 
I thought the vox were a tad too low on the first one.
