AEA R84: a GREAT microphone!

Just thought I'd put in a plug for my new favorite microphone. It's my first ribbon, and man, what a beauty this mic is! Very smooth, yet I feel it still fits into an aggressive style of music, very well. Also takes EQ very well.
I never liked LDC's on my voice. Strongly preferred an M88 to my U87, 4050, Gefell and others I tried over the years. However, the R84 is now my favorite vocal mic. Try it, you'll love it!

...you'll probably want to get rid of that nasty ol' Gefell mic then...
...I'm feeling charitable - I'll adopt it for you...;) :D

And if you want a little brighter sound, sing into the backside of the mic.

yes it is... I have a pair and I just tracked vocals this weekend with mine.

:) They were initially used to track a Jazz band several years ago. I usually try to buy mics in pairs.

Well, there's a reason it's a great mic, it's an RCA ripoff. You see that old RCA 77 at every old school recording session...it's not because it looks cool.

Other than the overall "giant pill" look, the AEA R84 is not at all similar to the 77DX. The 77DX is a short ribbon, multi-pattern mic, while the R84 is a long ribbon, single-pattern design. If anything, the R84 is more like the 44BX as far as internal design. The output is +2 dB hotter than a Shure SM57, so Wes did some serious work on the R84; it ain't an "RCA ripoff".

Used it back in the day, Me Liiiike!

AEA: They're Grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!

Aha, I started by saying 44B but I changed my mind based on the look. Oh well, it looks like a 77 rip off.

But see, what kind of message does that send to newer people here? You state it's a 77 ripoff, but you don't state any facts to help people make some intelligent decisions.

Yes, the R84 has the round perforated metal grill, but the 77 doesn't have an enclosed top like the R84 does, so it's pretty easy to tell the two models apart. Finally, as I mentioned above, the R84 internal design is completely different from the 77. It's hardly a "77 rip off".

I'm not trying to dis you here (hell, you got more rep in 8 weeks than I have in 6 years here, so you must know something), but if you're gonna make statements like that, you should back it up with some facts.

Harvey, I have been reading your posts for the past 6 years here, I am jake-owa. No one has gotten more neg rep than me...since rep was started. This is my third username. I just assumed it was a 77 rip off, please excuse me. I have never used one of these classic ribbon mics nor was I trying to show off my great wealth of knowledge.

Lighten up a little old man. :)

you were wrong, take it like a man

Yes I was and I did. Any more from the peanut gallery?

Of course there is, why do I even ask?

nope that's it-- your edgy retort has squelched any further musings from the peanut gallery. carry on :)

But just to be totally fucking clear here....it's an easy mistake.

it's okay to be wrong dude-- lighten up, er... man of unknown age :)

edit: whose post i just quoted was hastily deleted apparently

I tried to post pics of the two mics but it didn't work.

you sure say a lot for a guy who is done...

yes, clearly it was established that the mics look alike.

you sure say a lot for a guy who is done...
well, you continued to rationalize your error after supposedly admitting that you were wrong and 'taking it like a man,' so i had more to say as well. i guess it was a breach of contract by both sides. :)
