Probably because it's attached to the PCB of the power amp, which needs to be at the back of the box for space & cooling purposes, and it would increase manufacturing costs to put the pot on leads routed to the front of the box.

They're only there for calibration - They put them out of the way because they're not intended for use as a "volume control" - You calibrated them (against the output of your monitoring controller) and forget about them.

i get what yer sayin but i think its a balls

i went to work the other day, a friend called and he was doing whatever but during the day he turned up the monitors to see how loud they went and when he turned them back down he did'nt leave them at an equal level i got home from work and spent the rest of the evening and into the very early hours of the next day working on a mix only to listen back to it in my car to hear the mix all lob sided

what a waste of time

if the volume know was on the front i would have noticed, guess i'll be cheakin everything in future when someone calls to play when im not around, lesson learnt

The point is, your freidn should not have been attenuating them from those knobs. Those knobs should be set such that you get clean volume from the source at maximum volume from your source. That's what was meant by calibration above. You then attenuate at the source or via a passive atty or some such.

Run a -20dBRMS signal out with your monitoring controller at a repeatable "home" spot. Calibrate that spot for 79dBSPL (C-weighted, slow response) for *each* monitor.

and of course they did'nt sign it....

let me say that i do not control the volume from the speakers i either use my mixer or the p.c.

my thread was just a question as to why manufactures dont put the volume knob on the front of the speaker,

i know how to control the volume as the heading stated it was just a simple question

The knobs on my monitors are up front...and I haven't touched them since I put them on my desk....and they are cheap.
