Will this work?

My band mates brother recently gave us some equipment to make very basic recordings. The setup would consist of: a shure sm57 hooked up to a behringer xenyx 502 via a whirlwind xlr to xlr cable and the behringer is hooked up to cool edit pro 2.0 by using the cd out to the computer's microphone input. Will this be enough to give us half decent tracks?

One thing to watch for though is you said 'cd out to mic in'. That sounds like a voltage miss-match. Assuming cd is 'line level it'd be too hot for a mic input.

For $30 its the best mixer-interface combo. Run your Behringer outs (RCA left and right) into this interface, plug it into the comp by using the usb cable. This way you dont have to go through your soundcard, you mixer acts as the soundcard
