Bonded Logic 'Ultratouch' - Better than OC 703

ahhh...well keep us posted ;)

Has anyone else tried this stuff out in panels or any other treatment methods? If so, pleased? displeased? indifferent?

Yep I made some corner wedges of part cotton, part mineral wool. The cotton was a little tricky to cut--too tough for scissors, to stringy for electric knife--and it does compress quite a bit (I could have used just a little more material than the bales provided after compression), but I think it works well. I can't really do any measurements, but just guessing I would expect it to be able to absorb more above 1k than the denser mineral wool. Probably better at handling side reflections and other "grazing" reflections. Could be a little tricky to make it hold its form in a hanging absorption cloud though.

So to sum up, I think I would prefer 4" mineral wool for corner wedges; but if you got creative and used the cotton to shove into some sort of frame/holder, I think it can be effective as well. You could do some neat custom absorbers that would be difficult to do with mineral wool. As far as cost effectiveness, you gotta figure in the compression...

Ok.. well then.. what about for say, ceiling absorption?

My studio is in my unfinished basement. I currently have covered 703 panels all around on the sidwalls but almost nothing in the joists above. Sound like this stuff would be perfect to run in the joist cavities and a little cheaper then mineral wool.

Thoughts on its use in this application?

Actually now that I think about it, may not be cheaper as I can get mineral wool locally for about $1.19 psf. (no shipping)

Yep, I think this would be an excellent application for the stuff. Use some kind of fabric to tack it up there, and you'll be all set. Although if you can get mineral wool significantly cheaper, that would be a good route too. I would expect mineral wool to block a little more sound than the cotton, which may be desirable to keep upstairs a little more quiet; but I'm sure it won't do a great deal for soundproofing either way.

hey its been a while since anyones posted on this, i was just wondering if anyone has accually tryed this stuff and if it is comparible to 703? i would like something as good as 703 but without the harmful fibers, and i hear that rockwool is just as bad as fiberglass though. so it would be nice to have something "green" and less expensive as long as it is comparible.

Hay they used this stuff on Extreme Makeover Home Edition last night....just for insulation not for bass trapping, but hay it was cool to see it being used.

I am still considering getting some, but its too expensive to have it shipped and its like 4 hour drive that I am not quite ready to make yet ;)

Ya, got a bundle to treat joist cavities. Last year alittle after the thread.. I had no choice, since every dealer was out of OC703.

I stuffed 75% of the ceiling, and with a mask, I still had alot of material stuck in every crevice of my head. Especially when you start sweating. At first I didn't think I would need a mask, until it was getting hard to breath sicne my nostrils were getting full of cotton
The stuff is hard to work with on a ceiling, maybe not so bad for wall/panels.

After a few months, I found a supplier for Roxul SAFE. SAFE is 4.5pcf if I remember correctly.. $25 for 3 sheets (2x4) Ultra cost me about $135 for a bundle of R13(3.5" 96squareft). Roxul SAFE may a bigger dent in the bass response me thinks.

P.S. Yeah same Tonio, just tried to update my email addy and got dumped.

If you want something similar to 703 in terms of density and thickness (3lb and 1 or 2"), I also have that available. It comes in 8 colors and works as well or better than the 703. The downside is that the price is basically double. The upside is that you don't need to cover it so you get some of the money back there.

Would that stuff be good for gluing to the back of pegboard or would it fall apart?

Why would you wanna glue it to the back of pegboard? Are you thinking of building a helmholtz resonator from perforated mdf(pegboard)?

Honestly, you'd probably be better with the standard broadband absorber straddeling the corner, superchunks, or membrane absorber if only bass absorption is needed. I had the same idea a while ago, and askd some very knowledgable people, and they all just recommended the standard broadband absorber straddeling the corner, or superchunks.

Not sure why you'd want to do that but you can certainly mount it that way if you want. As long as you're going to put the board to the wall and not expect to have any air gap in back it'll be OK I guess.

I suspect tex is looking to build a helmholtz resonator. I have this idea a while back, but lost it veery quickly after talking to the experts.

If that's the goal, then bonding to the pegboard isn't necessary. You'll have to build a sealed box anyway or the Helmholz won't perform. If you build the box correctly, you'll just slip the UT into it and it will stick - then mount the pegboard over the front.

2" 3LB Ultratouch panels

New to this particular forum...Was looking for Bonded logic sound boards, (found this thread) which is what bonded logic calls them but you cant buy direct..I think some one(Acousticalsurfaces or ASI) took the idea that Bpape was trying to pull off and calls them Echo Eliminator panels. Which is basically compressed Ultra touch insulation that doesnt need any fabric to cover because its safe, comes in different colors and hangs right on the wall with excellent NRC ratings.

Im looking to buy this stuff cheaper and have to think someone here knows where to buy it wholesale...Every where I look keeps bringing me back to ASI and sister companies, do they have a monopoly on this stuff or what!? HEre is the direct link from the company that they get it from. I called over there and and of course they referred me to ASI! But the girl on the phone was really nice and its a semi new product.
