Revised Desk based on PK1's desk

Originally the desk I started was based very loosly on the Argosy console for a FW1884.
After looking at pk1's desk and understanding better how he put stuff together I decided to re-do the desk I started.

I am not a carpenter and outside of basic framing and drywalling have not used wood tools in 20 years (Jr. High shop class). I didn't use cam screws as I couldn't get the holes to line up right.

I am traveling this week so I won't be able to update these pics with anything new till at least next saturday.

This is the sidecare with my 01v in it to see if I screwed up my measurements. Its wide enought that I could use it as a rack if I ever want to. You can't tell in this picture but the sides are even with the 01v.

This pic is before tidying up the sidecar. Trying to get a visual of how I need to connet the main table to the sidecar. The front will be even with the top of the desk.

Now... since I am not going to spend the $$ to powder-coat this, do I need to prime MDF before painting?

Priming/sealing will be a good idea. The MDF is going to suck up a lot of paint and will raise the surface grain if you don't treat it first. Have you considered laminating it?

What's involved with laminating it? And would not that cost about the same as powder coating it?

Just FYI, you cannot powder-coat no-conductive materials like wood/MDF.

Anyway.........I like the design, and would love to see a fancy little upolstered and padded forearm rest on the front of that cosole.

Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing new pics.

Hello dcwave. For not woodworking for so long, looks like your doin great.

Heres a few tips on fastening your deck to the sidecars. There are many variations. Another thing, you might need a strongback(angle iron or wood stiffener) under your deck if it has a long span with heavy weight on it. One of these joints is a doubled deck. I do this for extremely long spans with no stiffener. For finishing, laminating is cool, but unless you have a router with a flush cutter, its very difficult to trim once laminated. You could file it...naw..just prime it and paint. Thats what MDF is good for. Personally, I like Lacquers. EASY. Even spray cans. Always spray a sanding sealer though, and sand lightly between coats. 220 usually works best. Lacquers come out nice, and their durable too. I'm not too keen on latex for fixture work, although it has its place.
Anyway heres some joints.

just so you know... you can powder coat mdf and other wood based materials.. i dont know where you got that idea from but your way off the mark, in future i suggest you do your homework before you post things like that which are misleading to other users.

in the uk we have been poweder coating mdf for years, also if you read the info on the argosy consoles produced in the states you will find that they POWDER COAT their consoles there...

info point 1: good pdf info reguarding mdf powder coating but things have moved on http://sres.anu.edu.au/associated/fpt/mdf/thesis/mdf/node17.html

these are uk powder coaters for mdf
http://www.batchglow.co.uk/
http://www.mdfcoaters.co.uk/ im using these for my powder coating
http://www.gardwellcoatings.co.uk/powder1.html
and for wet spraying a plastic polymer coating this company can supply you the special paint that cures in an oven at 200 degrees..

thats todays lesson over dont forget your homework...

hey dc you got a web cam??

i can hook mine up and we can chat about this if you want reguarding the cams, dowels placing etc...

im going to put the plans for the legs, front ,rear panels and side panels up tomorrow. so you will be able to start on them also.

not sure if i explained but its easier to start there then do the upper sections than it is to go top down. but i will help you get there ;)

just one thing... i dont like the screws showing in the front of the first pic, but hey im just a fu**ing perfectionist ;) oh and a snob lmao...

but dont worry the info is on its way up ;)

nice work ;) :) :) :) :) :)

also the space between the interior sides of your rack unit must be 19 - 1/8" that covers the rack strip that would go in there and the rack units. if it isnt that measurement you wont be able to use it as a rack unit.

pk1: yeah its 19 1/8. The angle looks weird in the pics.
I don't like the screws in the front either. They are counter sunk so I will fill them. That panel, BTW, was an after thought.

Fitz: Thanks, cutting a straight line has been the biggest challenge thus far!

Here is a mock up of what I hope it to look like when I am done.

Sorry, silly me. For some reason I was under the impression that to powdercoat a material it must conduct electricity, ie. opposite charges applied to the material and the spraygun that contains the powder. After powder application the material is kiln-baked to melt and solidify the coating.

Hhmmm, must have been my college Metal Processes teacher who said that. Well, what business does he have giving out information anyway?!

And to those I've misled: I'm SO SO SORRY for leading you down the wrong path. One day I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me. I'm so ashamed......I must be the ONLY ONE ever to post to this BB with out the infinite knowledge and wisdom of the great almighty pk1. I'll never again post with out his consent.

Sorry to piss you off.

PS. thanx for the lesson

Clamp on a straight edge and Route it or skill saw it if you don't have a table saw. Or rough cut it, and THEN clamp on a straight edge and flush route it. On things like your middle deck, make a template from scrap stuff, get all the edges straight, and then clamp it to your MDF piece. Then flush route to the template using a roller bearing cutter. :)

Hey thane, here is some info.

Once again Fitz.....on the money!

"Some woods and wood products such as MDF have sufficient and consistent moisture content to provide conductivity and can be coated directly."

Thanx

ok ok... group hug... :)

there we all better now...?? gotta lose my damn teachers head. lmao

sorry guys, didnt mean to go over the top, benn a hard few days sorting stuff out this end and finishing these damn plans. i still havent heard from the site admins as to wether i can post them hear or not.. like i have said before i dont want any form of copyright issue hanging around...

update:
I am back in town today so I had a chance to do some more work.
Made the other sidecar, legs, and connected the desk to the sidecars. I am 240LBS and can sit on the table top and nothing creaks, moans or splinters - thats a good sign!. I can see that there are some things I wish I had thought through a little better - like the legs and the sidecar inner sidepannels and the angle I used for them. I might have some knee issues to deal with. I did some test priming - I wanted to see how much one spray can of primer would cover - not much. I think I will go with a 1 gallon bucket and brush the primer on then sand.

I am out of town until the 20th so no updates till then.

i can still see the screw holes... and i dont like the legs... he he he

the plans are coming up now so you have no excuse anymore!!!

anyway.. pm me young sir and we can talk dual 15..
