Another Sync Question

If a machine is sync capable can it use any sync "language?" For instance; the 488 mkii can use SMPTE but could I also use MTC? The reason I ask is I'm pretty sure my drum machine can act as a master and this way i wouldn't need to buy an external sync tone generator. Am I way off? Thanks for all of your insight.

Nope.

MTC is too detailed to be accurately captured and reproduced from analog tape for reliable communication, or rather the "listener" in the MTC sync relationship would be too picky...IIRC it is about 30x the pulse frequency of SMPTE and different pulse structure and e'thing...totally different animal.

JL Cooper makes a pretty cheap one to use a master to a DAW. The JL Cooper converts SMPTE that it stripes on the tape machine to MTC.
