1/2" tape recommendations

Hi, i'm sure i have seen a thread about this before on here but i can't find it now that i need it. anyway-

I'm looking for an alternative to quantegy tape. I am recording onto a fostex e-16 and want some high quality tape for an upcoming project. can anyone give any recommendations?

RMGI SM 911 is the same specification as Quantegy / Ampex 456 & is currently being manufactured.

You probably can also use RMG SM 468 for more of a "tape" sound" if you prefer? I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong?

thanks for all the replies.

i think i am going to try some RGM SM911, i would go for some higher quality plus 9dB but i don't know the first thing about setting up my machine for different types of tape.

Higher output tape like RMG / Emtec SM900 / Quantegy 499 ect; will wear out your recording heads quicker on the Fostex E-16, I was told this by a local repairman a while back!

Using very hot output tapes (+9) on narrow track recorders, such as the E16, is a very bad idea and a waste of money. Stick to +3 and +6, which means Quantegy 406, 456 and RMGI SM911.

cheers, well they didn't have any 911 so i had to go for 456 again luckily i took some extra money ;P
