Can anybody suggest what would be a good microphone for recording the room when a drum kit is playing? Suggestions would be welcome for recording just the drum kit or the whole band playing with a drummer. Actually, what we’re trying to do is record a band practice, drums, guitar, bass and vocals in the practice room but I figured the same mic would do the job in both cases. I’ve tried this with an Aston Spirit on the omni-directional setting and 0db level setting and it was a total disaster. Obviously the volume was too loud for the mic and it distorted badly.
There are two further setting -20db and -10db, but I haven’t tried these. I wanted to get some advice before doing so because it wastes a lot of practice time setting up the recording rig and if it’s not the right mic for the job I’d be better off getting a more suitable mic. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Gareth
