Please Mix This - A Challenge (really, very challenging)

Yo Harris! A day late and a dollar short here, as usual. Someone just mentioned this thing in Voxchat last night. Good stuff bro, and also a great idea for those of us who are mix-dead (sorta like brain dead... ...at least is applies for me;) ). But anyway, cool thread, and a shitload of cool attempts!

I'm hoping I'll have a chance to play with it this evening... not that it will be worth the wait to anyone that hears it!

It will actually take me several hours just to make it sound like I took a few minutes... and my time has been so limited lately.

I haven't had the chance to listen to all the mixes, yet, either. I don't know about the rest of you, but NWR only seems to give me about 1 out of every 10 songs I try to download from there... maybe I am logged in at the wrong time, I dunno. That's just my luck when it comes to NWR.

Oh, I forgot to give this thread the five stars it deserves.

Who was the fuckhead that one-starred this thread, anyways?

So there... I've been doing more drums for this... It's still simplistic, but now there are at least some fills and such..

I play the bass myself on this one aswell... and.. let' just say I'm not 100%...

Now I've been fiddling with this almost the entire day, so maybe I'm way off with things here...

OK, how's the levels on this one? How 'bout them drums?

Chrisharris, I now like your mix the best! I think, its yours anyway. I got lost as far as who did what (should have saved as author/ juliet). It says june 19,2003 23:58 16 thats yours right? If so you just gotta back off on the vocal fx some but dont go as dry as many others IMHO.
The harmony really, thats absolutely, works and those drums are Soooo much better. There may be some bass issues. theres some kind of tone (sound like a hearing test)right ear :) at 1:30 exactly. something similar at 2:03 maybe thats a bass thing? 2:55 as well. somethings resonating.
Its 1 am so Im listening with the sennheiser ears attached :D

Well I guess it was messugah's version after all  With my ears this one stands out from the crowd ****** stars

Peace
Bill

First off: Thanks a lot for listening and commenting! I appreciate it a lot.. I've been away for a 'few' beers with my friends, and this post/song was all I could think about on my way home.. (get a life)..

This also makes me feel like a pathetic fucking self-centered narcicist, 'cause I haven't spent the time listening to any of the other mixes posted in this thread.

I've enjoyed this a lot. At first I thought 'now this is a cheesy fucking tune, but I'll do it anyway'. As I've been working with it, it has grown on me. A simple and honest love song, backed up by very fine musicians. I'm not much of a songwriter myself, so I consider it a privelege to get to mix this. Big thanks to Chris and Al.

Notes for Sunday:
Skip church (hehe)...
Learn the bass, and record a new take.
New drums, better matched to the song.
Listen to, and commenting on the other mixes.

Big hugs to chrisharris!

Heres my mix of the tracks. Theres probably quite a bit of headroom compared to some of the others so turn up the volume. No final compression used. I ran out of free time.

Oh yeah, I figured out what those test tones were and edited them out Chris. This is not a headphone mix. I mixed it on monitors and got the headphone surprise after I was done. LOL

I havent figured out how to mix the harmony yet!
I see what you mean by this being a never ending project :)

Phew, man i tell ya, how the hell are we supposed to critique all of these? There's so many different sound's, does that have to do with what we monitor on? This has been so freakin' enlightening for me! But i'm still confused:confused: This would be alot easier if we were monitoring on the same system!!!! But this is about translation between systems, yes? I'll tell ya'll what i heard!:D

MR. LEWIS......... Lovin' the guitar's!!!! smooth come's to mind! just "WOW"! the whole mix is smooth, i can't get over the stero spread on the vox, though....But that's preference bullshit! this mix is my overall favorite for "ease of listening".

KRAMERAMA........ Mix #2..........went for the whole shebang!
To me this mix has the best bass sound(chris's bass) git's sound little thin. again.....might translate well like this! i'm so confrused!

DOUGIE "FRESH" H........... whole shebang here too! nice and clean, think the git's are a little too buried. a little "muffle" to the mix.

DOCTOR OF STAWL............. I'm hearing some "muffling" here as well. I think i can here some comp pumping on the git's?
u went for the dum's too, but i see you put them 6 feet under!:D

DADDY OF BEAT........ vox sound like he's singing in a medium metal room, git's are almost non exsistent. Sound's like a live recording with one mic. Overall level is very low.

LOONIEST OF TOONIEST....... Nice mix!!!! Maybe a little heavy on the verb, but this is total preference! Maybe a little bass heavy, don't know that would translate to other systems?

HOME SLUICE........ clean as usuall!!!! I'm gonna say something very odd and confusing!!!!!!!! This sound's real close to my mix!!!!!!!!!!!! "close" is the key word here. I don't know if that's a compliment or an insult!!!!! :D

Im gonna take a little "ear" break here, I shall return!!!!! I plan on getting to each and every mix!!!!!!! I'm a SICKO!

:D

And you heard my mix, so take everything i say with a shaker of salt! I'm just trying to participate!!!! FUN FUN FUN!!!!

yeah, what FLG said on most of those. Damn, this is a lot of listening.
Actually, I was very impressed with FLG's mix, except for the intro sounding pretty deep. pglewis had a spread I liked a lot too.
I may have to go ahead and load the tracks of the cd and make my mess, but it wouldnt even strike a spark next to some of these. Some really nice mixes and they are all different

Yeah, lmao...your username and this tune just don't seem to go together ;) ...but man, the most recent mix you posted...I gotta' say, nice job.

New drums - an obvious improvement over what I had.

Bass - Sounds huge, but clear

Sibilance - MUCH better...what did you use to de-ess?

Obviously, this mix can't be a contender for the big cash prize b/c of all of the cheating, lol...but I totally appreciate the work. I want a bass track from you, lol. And I'm not kidding.

Fender - Nice job, man...what did you do to the acoustic guitars? They sound fucking great? Don't tell me "nothing," dammit...that will only increase the mixing mystery.

Doug & wfaroni - be back after listens...I have a bunch of typing to do tonight, lol...

Dough - I'll say that THAT is one ripping fast connection you've got there from homesellers..., lmao.

I'll hit all the ones I haven't in a couple...

Doug - I'm singling you out again, lmao. NICE FUCKING JOB on that bass...I don't know if you did anything to it, or it's just the way it fits in with the sparser instrumentation in the first part of the song...but this is cool. Oooooh....are those my drums? Man, they sound good buried, lmao...I'm not kidding...it's a real subdued, kinda' bluegrass mix.

Sheesh...aside from the singing and the playing, this is a great mix to my ears.

Crap, how do I save that file, Doug? lemme' try the right click thing.

Well, i said i was gonna take an ear break, but i did this instead!!!!!!! I have "MESH" syndrome, i can't stop!

CRANK YOUR BASS!:D inspired by crawdad

snap?crackle?pop?clip? yup, it's got it all!:D

Chris i shall answer your git question in a moment, interesting that you asked!:D and back to listening to all these mixes too!

My wife has a party at work tonight, so i'm making a pot of coffee, and i'm down!!!!!(i'm such a party hard )

Wrong Doug

Nice mix Doug. Hanging the bass and drums back like that works great.
