Things I wish I learned about audio engineering

I recently decided to write an article on things I wished I learned sooner about audio engineering, in it I talk about a few things that would have saved me a lot of frustration! It received a really great response so I decided to start a blog where I can share more of my ideas. Check out...

SAVE ME! 48khz sounds like a chipmunk when burned to a cd?

Ok so I intern at a studio and ive worked my way up to being allowed to engineer lower profile sessions. So for todays session I accidently set up for 48khz PT session instead of what we usually use 44.1khz. Now, my boss has always told me never to record in 48khz because it will sound fast like...

    bouncng down ruins mixes.

Just learned in audio class that when you bounce down from a program like pro tools you actually lose some of your stereo imaging so you are better off sending the outputs to a two track machine. Anyone else want to add anything to this.

Best way to check your rooms frequency response?

Umm so basically the question is in the title but to clear anything up I want to put up some acoustic treatments. The thing is I want to know the before and after frequency response so I can tell if there is a major improvement. I know I will be able to hear it but I kinda want to know what it...

Does anyone else suffer from perfectionism?

I havent recorded any of my music for about 2 or 3 years. I play probably every night and every night I go to sleep thinking about my songs. I am afraid of recording my songs for fear of them not being the best that they can be. I want to be able to bring to life what I hear in my head but that...

    First track recorded to tape.

Ok well this was a project for school where we just had to record a full band completely to tape not using pro tools at all. It was recorded using an oram console and a otari mtr 90 24 track tape machine in one of the studios at my school. I got my friends to come in and they laid down this...

    easy phase question.

Hey I was under the impression that whenever you start mixing you have to make sure the overhead hits line up with the toms, snare, and bass drum hits in order to reduce phase cancellation. Also in a case where a microphone is positioned further away then others like recording a guithr amp and...

    Unintentionally copying melodies.

Whenever I write melodies sometimes they sound like they came from somewhere else or just maybe they are soo good that it just sounds like it is already a song. I am afriad of unintentionally ripping off songs ive heard on a commercial or anywhere else. Maybe the melody just sticks in my head...

Ever been afraid to ruin your songs.

It happens almost all the time whenever I write a song and I really like it. It is very hard for me to put actually words to the music because I want them to be as good as music and I psyche myself out. Anyone ever get this.

If you were to record in an untreated room.

    Ughhh professionals are so good.

So yesterday I got to mix a pre-recorded track that was bought mixing practice purposes. The song was recorded so amazing and the song was arranged and produced perfectly that the song basically mixed it self. I threw up the faders to the right levels and it was basically done. No eq or...

So I got to mix in a real studio for the first time.

For this semesters audio class I get an hour each week with my group to do projects in my schools small studio. It was quite an expierence and just as fun as I would have imagined. Our assignment was to mix a prerecorded track using two outboard compressors and one time based effect. First...

    From the singer/songwriter perspective?

How do you get your full band sound out of your simple acoustic guitar chord progression. I find its hard if you are a solo act bringing in people to play or playing everything yourself to compose every part. The only way that works for me is tracking a very rough demo adding the instrument as I...

Just watched Dreamgirls thought it was funny...

I just watched that movie because it was on and ill watch anything that ha a clip of people recording in a studio. Anyway near the end of the film Beyonce is singing in the studio flailing around and swaying her arms about while recording. I just thought it was funny because that would never be...

How do YOU program your drum beats?

Do you do each drum individually and record the kick on a track, then the snare. Ive seen this done with pretty good results. Do you use a sequencer? Fruity Loops? Redrum? Do you map it all out midi? If so do you play your keyboard to it at first and then change it around. I feel there are so...

So whoever invented the floating floor tom should be shot but thats another story. Anyway I need something to hold up my floor tom because I lost the stand that it comes with in moving.
