    Problems with large drives

I need to buy a new hard drive since my biggest drive just died last night. Luckily it wasn't my main drive. In my Windows XP SP2 computer, I have 3 drives: a 20, a 40, and an 80 (which just died). I'm looking to buy one drive on which to have all my date. I would like a 250. The drive will...

    Neumann Contest/Solutions

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before (I did a search), but I found an interesting download on the Neumann site. They have the 1998 and 2003 Sound Engineering Contest CDs available for download on the site, along with the annotated solutions to the questions. Many of the questions...

    Re-solder S/PDIF

When I pulled out a digital coax cable connected to my 1010lt, it ripped off the connector from the sound card's breakout cable. Is it perfectly acceptable to just re-solder the RCA connector? Or does the fact that it's a digital cable require something different?

    Ac

This may be a dumb question, but I'm still going to ask. If, in AC, the current is alternating, how does it get anything done? How does an audio signal get from point A to point B if the current is constantly reversing direction? Is it like sound propagation?

    Bookshelves

Last night, I was reading the Crutchfield.com guide to acoustics .. and they mentioned that a "bookcase filled with odd-sized books makes an effective diffusor." Is this true? I have my drumset set up against a wall which has a couple shelves for books. I was about to take them down and put up...

    Before I spend 250 dollars...

can someone review this for me? I had this posted in another thread, but I thought I might be better off just posting it by itself. I think I'm going to order the mineral wool panels from insulationworld.com. I'm figuring six 4" panels and sixteen 1.5" panels...

    Stuffing fluff

Mr. Winer, and anyone else who could answer, you said in your article, when talking about basstraps In my basement, I have the unfinished ceiling with the support boards exposed, which you were referring to with that statement. Would just putting fluffy fiberglass in the beams be enough, or...

Looking for a mic for this voice

I'm looking to buy a LDC, mostly for vocals. And the vocals will be mostly from the voice in the top two songs of this page: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=378368 Kind of a tenor-y, smooth, bluesy voice, I guess. I have a few songs of my friend there recorded through a...

    Acoustic Foam Kits

I guess this is where this question goes. How effective are the commercial acoustic foam kits? Like this one on ebay The company says the NRC, overall, is 0.88. Would something like that be okay to buy? Or would it not be recommended? I don't think I've ever seen acoustic foam kits discussed...

    Diy Dmp3

I found this thread in another forum about a schematic for a DMP-3 "clone." http://studio-central.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=9114&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight= The diagram came from the manual of a Texas Instruments INA163 op amp. So, I got the parts, and with the help of my...

    Live Sound

How much of an amp--speakers, too-- would I need to effectively fill a venue? Like, say, space for 750 people with people to fill that space. 500watts .. ? I really have no idea.

    Tracktion bug... maybe

Does anyone else have this problem: When I record a basic guitar rhythm, I punch it in so that I can simply loop it. So say I record four measures from 01:01:00 to 04:01:00 (bars)... I loop that clip and it's all good. But then I unloop it (or I take the audio file into another program like...

i don't have any ideas for a catchy title

I recorded this about 20 minutes ago with the help of my new (!) mxl 993s and 990. Can anyone offer any feedback on the recording? http://www.audiostreet.net/artist.aspx?artistid=7190 <-- the stream labelled "drumming" The 993s were used as overheads, in the fashion that "tubedude" presented...

    Understanding the wave form

I guess this question belongs in the forum. How do you read a wave form (if that's even what it's called)? What I'm asking is, for example, what does the shape of the audio file tell me: http://www.freewebs.com/eraos/pictures/gwmain.png --the photo is from goldwave.com-- And what does the...

no midi coming through my speakahs

About a month ago, I had to reformat my pc and reinstall my os which is 98se. So I did that, and I also put on XP on my D:. 98 on C:, XP on D:. After I did that, I didn't mess with any sound settings (didn't install the drivers for my onboard audio) because I knew I'd be getting a recording...
