Tascam 488 Mk1 - No input on 4 and 8

Hi. I am having a problem getting input to tracks 4 and 8 (group 4). I have switched the sync switch on the back on and off, am panned to even, have the 3/4 buttons pressed. I am sending signal from channels one and two, and can record fine to the other 6 tracks. Only group 4 is problematic, before it even hits the tape. Over the years, I have had problems with track 8, and the sync switch on the back is usually the culprit. This is the first time I am having trouble with track 4 as well. Could it be the unit? What else should I try? Trim is up, faders are up.

Can't say for sure here, but...

I've worked minor miracles many times over by taking things apart and pulling/reseating connectors. I can't even count how many times that's fixed break points in signal flow on numerous vintage Tascams. The only downside is you have to disassemble and reassemble your unit carefully but thoroughly. Fact is that I've done this many times and still have many more yet to do.
