Up until my MBP I built all my pcs.
P4 3.0ghz/asrock, on board graphics (intel?)
core2duoE6600/asrock, nvidia 7600gs
core2quad q9550/GB P35-ds4, nvidia 8800gt.
The last one there even became a hackintosh later in its life.
I've never had any major compatibility issue.
The best bet is to look at someone else's build then pretty much copy it.
If you can confirm that someone else is running a board without issue, then you're gold.

how in depth hardware wise are you? mbox, 2, mini, 3, 002, etc?
