Fostex R8 tape, Emtec?

Hi!

I'm a happy owner of a Fostex R8 reel to reel. When I bought it I got bunch of tape with it, mainly Ampex 457. Now I'm beginning to run out and I need more tape but I can't find Ampex 457 anywhere. I live in Finland.

I was wondering, would this tape work Emtec 1/4"? Or do I have to re-bias or something. I'm not an expert on these things, and I need your help. I just need more tape to record more music. ;)

Thanks

I used to use a Fostex A8 (man does that show my age or what?)
My local tape tech used to claim that the deck should be set up for the particular tape you're using, but I don't know how much difference it would make if you used the Emtech tape on a machine setup for Ampex.
Maybe try a reel and see?

You'll need Emtec 911

I believe Emtec 911 should be available on 7" reels of 1/4" tape.

Emtec 911 is Quantegy 456/457 compatible.

You could use Quantegy 456 also, with no issues. ;)

Also 3M 226, if you can find it.

If you want to stick to a tape that is closer to 457, look for EMTEC LPR35. It is backcoated 1-mil, considered similar to 457.
