Fostex 812

Neil Ogilvie

Still Learning.......
I'm a Newbie to this forum - I've not used a piece of Fostex gear as yet (a mate has a fostex 8 track though which is pretty good appparantly).

However, I have just had an offer of buying a Fostex 812 mixer. At the moment I'm using a Behringer MX2004a - will this be much of an upgrade? It seems to be a munch better mixer.....

Has anyone had any experiance with this mixer?

Cheers, Neil

I too use a Behringer mixer, and no experience with fostex mixers. All I can say is the quality of the fostex gear I do have is very good. I'd say go for it, as long as the price is right.

I had a couple of the fostex 812 mixers and they are not to bad.
One thing to consider is that the fostex only has 24 volt phantom
power and I dont know how that will get along with some of the
newer mics that need 48 volt power.

Wow - thats weird. Never heard of Mixers doing that before. Are these mixers quite old?

On the same note, does anyone know where I can get the specs for this mixer? I have looked on www.fostex.com but they don't list this mixer, despite me seeing pictures of it.

Thankyou grealty to both bdbdbuck and Herm for replying - I am at a loss without this bbs!

These mixers are probably 10 years old if not more. Im really not sure.
I r dont think you will see a improvement in the sound of the
preamps on this mixer.
They do not have a lot of head room also.
But I will stick my neck out and say that i liked the sound of the
eq on this mixer better than the eq on my Mackie 8 buss.
( warmer not as harsh) But at that time i was using 16 bit adats.

If your looking for a better sounding preamp than what you have
probably the next step would be a Mackie maybe but there are
those that will say no that you need to go to some good outboard
pres that start at about 600 a channel.
