hello,

first, i'll say that i'm completely new to recording and really don't know what i'm doing (but i'm having a lot of fun so far). i recently acquired a zoom h4n and some monitors. to play back recordings through the powered monitors, i connect the monitors to the h4n directly using a splitter.

is this the best way to play back sound through the monitors? or should i be feeding the signal into an external DAC before the monitors? same question if i first was to transfer the files to my computer. are the DACs in computers (or the zoom h4n) typically good enough?

thanks!

Yes using powered monitors with the side output socket is fine although I do not understand why you need a splitter? Normally a powered monitor pair will connect together at one of the monitors. Regarding the computer, the answer all depends if you are using a high quality motherboard sound system e.g. RealTek (or RealTek HD), or if you are using a separate soundcard. The motherboard method usually has a 2-4W output capability for use with small un-powered desktop speakers but you can take this to your powered monitors. A separate soundcard will not have enough power to drive un-powered speakers so again you can use your powered ones.

It's certainly the cheapest. Is it the best? Eh...
