Hello,
My friend gave me a Zoom H4 for cheap and I was wondering, is their anyway to get a decent drum recording with one of these? I know you can plug mics in, but is it possible to use the two built in mics, plus another one that I can plug in?

I'm actually about to get one of those for recording on the go. I would suggest experimenting with the positioning. I think with some experimentation, you could get a good representation of the drums (considering a single x-y setup). It depends on the room you're in but I'd start out 5-10' in front of the kit at about the height of the snare drum. Also, try walking around the backside of the kit. You'll have to experiment to find the sweet spot for your space.

With the little time I have had so far.. I noticed..

I really want to get my kick more clear through the mix..My snare sounds alright, and the toms aren't loud enough.. the cymbals, if I hit them the normal way I do, they're a bit too loud..

I had these results with the recorder about 2 feet above my head pointed horizontally. This was in my garage.

Any suggestions?

John

you could use something like drumtrig to add a kick sample to your drum tracks. i'm assuming that you mix on a computer. if not, i'm no help.
