Hi, Has anybody tried the Zoom H2 or do you have any comments about it?
I'm looking at options for portable recording.

Thanks,
Jim

likewise...

no reply so i'll give it a go!
ye i was looking into the h2 as well but also now the h4.
it seems pretty cool for an entry level thing with a few tracks for some basic mucking about at home which is what i want it for.
some other input would be much apreciated.

I've looked at both of them. I'd more likely buy the H2. The only thing I'd use either for would be for recording my practice or when I'm writing. I might also take it to the occasional show to record. Since I do all my tracking on my PC, though, there's no benefit to spending an extra $100 on the H4.

I've owned one for about a year now. It has worked flawlessly since I bought it, and has some nice features.

I've used it for field recording - recorded walking in leaves last fall for someone, and a thunderstorm this past spring. I also use it weekly to record Podcasts at my church. I run out of my Yamaha board directly into the stereo line in (1/8") on the H2. Works really well and sounds good at 44/16. I usually record at 44/16, but have tried the 44/24 mode just to test, and it sounded great. Haven't done anything with surround sound recording yet. I also use it when I'm writing music as a scratchpad of sorts. I just pop in on a mic stand using the screw-in adapter that allows the recorder to sit in a mic clip, and record my ideas.

Built-in mics are pretty decent IMO - not stellar by any means, but for a $200 digital recorder, they are nice.

All in all, this was a well spent $200. It has quite a few features and sounds good. What else could one ask for. Heck, I've even dropped it accidentally a couple times, and it still held together. Mind you, it wasn't a ten foot drop. It's not built like a tank though - plastic casing all around - so I don't want to give the impression that it's super durable.
