I thought I'd post this question JUST FOR FUN.

If you could only own ONE mic (God forbid), which one would it be? I know, but I don't want to hear it... just pick ONE!!!

PS. No stereo mic are allowed. Smile

I'll start it off with the Sennheiser MD421.

I've seen this question a couple times. FOr me, I think the answer is pretty easy: some sort of good quality stereo mic for my primary purpose, which is recording a small orchestral ensemble. Something like a very good condition C24 or C426, or maybe the Schoeps CMXY mic. That Studio Projects LSD-2 is awfully tempting to me as well...

That's cheating, you didn't pick "ONLY ONE", lol. This is an amendment to my original posted question. No stereo mic's are allowed this time. hehehe

Now that I think about it, I don't think I ever saw anyone on a forum reply to this question with a stereo mic. :)

I'd get the most expensive mic that I could get! Then I'd rent it out to people for "modest" sums after I convince them that THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE MIC AROUND! THIS WILL MAKE YOU SOUND AMAZING!... :D

trick answer: oktava mc012 with all the heads, including LOMO

whatever costs the most, in case I ever run into finacial problems

Hahaha!
Then I go for a Schoeps compact system, with all the capsules! That's gotta be more than a dozen... :D

You beat me to the answer Pipe. The Russian/Swiss army knife of mics.

I'd also go for an original, pristine condition C-12.

That's easy, because all i had for years is one mic. sm-57. then again, i have no idea what i'm missing. so my answer is out of total ignorance. Ask one of those guys on the thread that lists all the mics they have, they're the ones who can compare.... I'd like to see Harvey's opinion on it.

SM57, it will do anything. I wouldn't want to stick my U47 up against the head of a kick drum or close up on a loud rectifier cabinet. However, the 57 will do that, and track a soft jazz singer, and it will do all these jobs well.

You guys just don't know...........
Here, the best kept secret in the audio industry.
